Han Mingxin is the fourth son of Old Han, and Han Luoxue’s fourth uncle. He is strong and cunning, known for his quick thinking. He is responsible for pushing his older brother Han Mingyuan down the mountain, causing his paralysis, and he feels no remorse. In the story, he is eager to help his mother transport Han Luoxue to be sold, and later devises a plan to scare the separated family at midnight to get their grain and rabbit. He is brutish and selfish, caring only for his own benefit. He is the one who suggests using the superstitious fear of the haunted courtyard to drive them back. He is a key villain among the Old Han men.
