Kaode is a guard stationed outside the camp tent. He shivers in the night breeze and looks enviously at Old Toke and the others entering the warm tent. He complains to himself that he wants Yalanke to change his post because he does not want to guard the gate. He continues his duty of counting stars while the others enjoy food and fire inside. Kaode represents the common soldier enduring tedious watch.
