The protagonist and narrator of the story, a 17-year-old young man who was abandoned at a Taoist temple by his mother after his father died. He spent ten years there, learning Taoist scriptures under the taciturn Old Taoist, though he remained an atheist. He descends the mountain with three mysterious Taoist books and 369 yuan, gets a buzz cut, and travels to Guangzhou. There he reunites with his Second Martial Uncle and becomes involved in handling supernatural cases, beginning his journey into the hidden world.
