Yuan Tie, also called Old Second, is the second son of Yuan Shan. He is a young, energetic man eager to improve his family's situation. He accompanies Yuan Tao on hunting trips, helping carry game and firewood. He shows great interest in gaining strength, trying unsuccessfully to draw the powerful war bow. He respects Yuan Tao and keeps his secrets. He is optimistic about the future, even considering joining the army despite his father's disapproval to earn money. He is obedient and full of admiration for his uncle's newfound abilities.
