Yun Niang is Han Mingyuan’s wife and the mother of Han Luoxue, Han Luoyu, and a baby son. She is described as frail, pale, and ghost-like due to malnutrition and the ordeal of the famine. She has been biting her own fingers to feed her infant son with blood because she has no milk. She is deeply afraid of Old Madam Han and the rest of the Old Han family, but she loves her children desperately. When she learns that her daughters are about to be sold and eaten, she is horrified and supports her husband’s decision to split the family. She is initially doubtful about their survival after the split, but she follows her daughter’s lead. She is observant and notices the unusual sweetness of the well water brought by Han Luoxue, hinting at her perceptiveness. Her health is extremely poor, and she relies on her eldest daughter’s cleverness to keep the family together.
