Zhang Lei is a colleague of Lin Feng at the environmental company. He resents Lin Feng because Lin Feng outperformed him in the job interview, and Zhang Lei only got hired through his uncle's influence as a senior executive. He repeatedly sabotages Lin Feng's work: he causes the truck driver to disappear, tampers with the sewage treatment so that tests fail, and makes the landowner renege on the sale of land. After Lin Feng is fired, Zhang Lei confronts him, openly laughing about his schemes. Lin Feng kicks him in the chest, and Zhang Lei later returns with five thugs to beat him up, though they miss him. Zhang Lei is vengeful, manipulative, and eager to see Lin Feng fail.
