Zhang Ma is the coarse, plump, dark, and ugly old woman who drives the carriage for Wen Mingqian and Gong Changan. She is extremely loud, blunt, and fiercely loyal to her mistress. Upon arrival, she argues with the steward and curses the retainers, unafraid of creating a scene. She has triangular eyes and is ridiculed for her rustic manners. She is the only servant the mother and son brought back from Shuangxi. Zhang Ma takes care of the cooking and protects Wen Mingqian from the disrespectful maids in the manor.
