Lin Yi Nan, a thirty-two-year-old special operations soldier hardened by twelve years of survival in a zombie apocalypse, dies when a bomb collapses a building during a mission. She transmigrates into the body of a fifteen-year-old girl with the same name in the Great Yan Kingdom, year three of Jianxing. She wakes on a blood-soaked street in Ping Cheng, the city under brutal assault by Hu invaders. Her new mother, Li Shulan, wounded by an arrow in the chest, urges her to flee south to Jian City to find her elder brother. The original Lin Yi Nan was born into a scholarly family but had strong martial talent and trained with a hired master. Her father, Lin Zheng, was dean of Qinglian Academy, and her six-year-old brother Lin Yi An studied there. The academy was attacked by Hu soldiers the night before, and her father likely died. Li Shulan, determined to stay with her husband, tries to commit suicide with a hairpin. Lin Yi Nan stops her, knocks the hairpin away, breaks off the arrow, and drags her to a hidden alley. She bandages the wound using her space, which traveled with her soul, containing medical supplies, energy bars, weapons, and ammunition from her previous world. The Hu continue their massacre; Lin Yi Nan carries Li Shulan deeper into the city and finds a collapsed house near the wall.A family of merchants appears, led by an old man who reveals a secret tunnel their great-grandfather built, leading outside the city. Lin Yi Nan follows them through the tunnel to safety on a hillside. She declines the old woman’s invitation to travel together, as she senses greed in her eyes. She hides Li Shulan in a thicket, leaves her water and a dagger, and waits. From the hillside, she watches a Hu convoy on the road carrying grain and bound children from Qinglian Academy, including her younger brother Lin Yi An. Li Shulan, seeing her son, pleads with Lin Yi Nan not to risk her life, but Lin Yi Nan resolves to rescue him. She promises to return before dawn and re-enters the city through the tunnel.Inside, she dons black clothing and a mask, retrieves weapons from her space, and moves through the ruined city. She eliminates small teams of Hu soldiers with precise archery, collects their supplies, and stores them in her space. She observes that the high-ranking Hu are stationed in the government office, where they torment captured women. As night falls, Lin Yi Nan infiltrates the government office, determined to rescue her brother and eliminate the Hu leaders. The story follows her dangerous mission to save her remaining family and survive the chaos of war using her combat skills and the resources from her space.

30. Overall, the read is gripping so far. It’s a solid transmigration survival story with good pacing, believable emotional beats, and a protagonist who acts like she’s been through hell. I’m not bored, and I actually want to know what happens next—which is the best sign for a novel start.

2 I’m not fully sold on the “tunnel dug by great-grandfather” plot point. It feels a bit too convenient that this exact family shows up at the exact moment the heroine needs an escape. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it feels a little contrived. I’d rather she found the tunnel on her own or through her own wits.

2 The writing doesn’t waste time on explaining why the Hu are attacking. It’s just “they’re here, they’re killing.” That works because it keeps the focus on survival, not politics. Maybe later I’ll want more worldbuilding, but for now, the urgency is more important.

2 I’m curious if the space will be a major plot point or just a convenience tool. If it’s constantly used to pull out exactly what’s needed, it might feel cheap. But so far, it’s used sparingly—just disinfectant and a flashlight. I hope it stays that way.

2 The detail about the arrowhead having no barbs is a nice touch. It shows the author thought about the mechanics of wound treatment. Too many stories just say “she pulled the arrow out” without considering if it’s barbed or not. Small accuracy like that earns my trust.

2 I appreciate that the heroine doesn’t monologue about her past life or her trauma. She just acts. The flashbacks to her own parents sacrificing themselves are brief but powerful. They inform her choices without bogging down the action. That’s how you do backstory.
