Overall this chapter sets up the central conflict beautifully. We have the returned son trying to claim his place. The displaced son struggling to find his footing. The parents drowning in guilt. And the powerful older brother who holds all the cards. The dynamics are complex and everyone has valid motivations. I'm fully invested in where this story is going.
I really want to know more about Fu Wenxiu's thoughts. We get Chi An's internal monologue but Fu Wenxiu remains a bit of a mystery. He's clearly protective and observant but what is he thinking when he looks at Fu Jiamu? Does he feel any connection at all? Or is he just tolerating him for his parents' sake? I need his point of view next chapter.
The dialogue in this chapter feels very natural. No one is speaking in long exposition dumps. They talk like real people. Short sentences. Interruptions. Unspoken tension. The dinner conversation especially feels authentic with all the awkward pauses and forced pleasantries. It's not easy to write tense family dinners without feeling melodramatic but this nailed it.
Fu Jiamu's backstory about cooking for himself and eating instant noodles is clearly meant to tug at the heartstrings. And it works on the parents. But I'm skeptical because it's delivered with such perfect timing. It feels rehearsed. He knows how to play the sympathy card and he's using it to his full advantage. I don't trust his tragic backstory yet.
The way Chi Ying tries to set Fu Wenxiu up with a girl right in front of Chi An was so awkward. You can feel Chi An's discomfort. And Fu Wenxiu shuts it down so smoothly. It's interesting because it hints that maybe Chi An's feelings for his gege run deeper than just brotherly affection. There's a possessive edge to his reaction that I'm watching closely.
I'm a little worried about how Chi An's art supplies are just left in boxes. He paints. That's clearly important to him. And Fu Wenxiu tells him not to touch them for now. But if he's stuck in that tiny guest room with no space to work, is he going to lose that part of himself? I hope the story addresses his hobbies and doesn't let them fade away.
