Chi An is the adopted son of the Fu family, raised with unconditional love and a carefree childhood under the protection of his older brother Fu Wenxiu. When the biological son Fu Jiamu returns after being lost for twenty years, Chi An is forced to vacate his original room and move into a small, damp guest room with old furniture and piled luggage. His parents’ attention immediately shifts to Fu Jiamu, leaving Chi An feeling like an outsider. His only solace is Fu Wenxiu, who is away on a business trip but remains in contact. Chi An’s sense of displacement deepens during dinner when he sees his mother fuss over Fu Jiamu, who skillfully portrays himself as a pitiable victim, while Chi An’s own struggles go unnoticed. Unable to stomach the overly sweet dishes prepared for Fu Jiamu, Chi An picks at his food until Fu Wenxiu returns. Fu Wenxiu’s arrival changes the atmosphere. He immediately notices Chi An’s discomfort and questions Fu Jiamu about his professional knowledge in logistics, exposing his lack of practical understanding. When Fu Qiao suggests giving Fu Jiamu a managerial position in the family company, Fu Wenxiu flatly refuses, citing the company’s strict hiring standards and relegating Fu Jiamu to an intern assistant role. He also orders the household kitchen to switch to sugar-free cooking, a direct response to Chi An’s unhappiness with the food. After dinner, Fu Wenxiu follows Chi An to the guest room, teases him for his petulant behavior, and helps organize his belongings. He comforts Chi An by physically checking his hands for marks from moving boxes and ensuring the bed is made properly. Chi An’s initial embarrassment fades as he realizes his gege’s support has not wavered. That night, after Fu Wenxiu leaves, Chi An feels the hollow emptiness in his heart filled by his brother’s care. The next morning, Chi An wakes up in the unfamiliar guest room, receives a friend request from Fu Jiamu, and ignores it. He opens his chat with Fu Wenxiu, reading their previous messages, and feels reassured that his bond with his gege remains unshaken despite the family’s shifting dynamics. The story sets Chi An’s displacement against Fu Wenxiu’s forceful protection, establishing the central conflict where Chi An’s place in the family is threatened but his brother’s loyalty provides a secure foundation.

Overall this chapter sets up the central conflict beautifully. We have the returned son trying to claim his place. The displaced son struggling to find his footing. The parents drowning in guilt. And the powerful older brother who holds all the cards. The dynamics are complex and everyone has valid motivations. I'm fully invested in where this story is going.

I really want to know more about Fu Wenxiu's thoughts. We get Chi An's internal monologue but Fu Wenxiu remains a bit of a mystery. He's clearly protective and observant but what is he thinking when he looks at Fu Jiamu? Does he feel any connection at all? Or is he just tolerating him for his parents' sake? I need his point of view next chapter.

The dialogue in this chapter feels very natural. No one is speaking in long exposition dumps. They talk like real people. Short sentences. Interruptions. Unspoken tension. The dinner conversation especially feels authentic with all the awkward pauses and forced pleasantries. It's not easy to write tense family dinners without feeling melodramatic but this nailed it.

Fu Jiamu's backstory about cooking for himself and eating instant noodles is clearly meant to tug at the heartstrings. And it works on the parents. But I'm skeptical because it's delivered with such perfect timing. It feels rehearsed. He knows how to play the sympathy card and he's using it to his full advantage. I don't trust his tragic backstory yet.

The way Chi Ying tries to set Fu Wenxiu up with a girl right in front of Chi An was so awkward. You can feel Chi An's discomfort. And Fu Wenxiu shuts it down so smoothly. It's interesting because it hints that maybe Chi An's feelings for his gege run deeper than just brotherly affection. There's a possessive edge to his reaction that I'm watching closely.

I'm a little worried about how Chi An's art supplies are just left in boxes. He paints. That's clearly important to him. And Fu Wenxiu tells him not to touch them for now. But if he's stuck in that tiny guest room with no space to work, is he going to lose that part of himself? I hope the story addresses his hobbies and doesn't let them fade away.
