Bai Yi awakens lying on a small wooden bed in a thatched hut, greeted by a voice that announces he has entered the Misty Land. He is told that regardless of past wealth or illness, everything begins anew. Weaknesses have been forcibly compensated to the average value, and a Shelter Logbook is provided to help him understand the world. His only task is to survive. Bai Yi, who spent ten years completely deprived of his senses after a steel bar pierced his spine, now finds himself able to move. He struggles to stand, falls, then picks up the Logbook. The Logbook reveals important notices: the shelter is unique and non-renewable; it must be reinforced; daytime is not necessarily safe; nighttime is dangerous; a newbie protection period lasts seven days, during which players inside the shelter suffer no physical damage. The shelter is a Thatched Hut with 10 durability. Bai Yi’s personal panel shows Strength 3, Spirit 9, Constitution 3, and Sanity 100. His talent, Steel Spine Will, has an active mode that dramatically increases Strength and Constitution as Sanity decreases, and a passive mode that locks Sanity at 1 and makes him immune to negative sanity effects while causing immense pain. Before he can explore further, a wind carries a strong smell of blood, and the door creaks open. He moves to close it, but a piece of flesh and bone strikes the door, creating a small hole. Through that hole, he sees something outside. The Logbook warns of an “Unseen” entity and begins a countdown to expel it. As Bai Yi exhales, he becomes slightly contaminated, losing 21 Sanity. The countdown reaches zero, and the entity is expelled.Bai Yi upgrades the shelter to a Worn Wooden House, which has 100 durability and includes a window and a Wishing Well. The Well can exchange items for random replacements, each item up to five times. Through the window, he sees the well appear outside. He browses the Logbook’s chat channel and forum. The world is populated by many players. He reads featured posts: one calculates day and night duration (10.02 hours day, 13.98 hours night); another describes dangers—beasts and Abyssal Demons appear beyond one kilometer from the shelter, and a Corpse-type Abyssal Demon is particularly dangerous; a third discusses the Wishing Well and its many failed attempts. He also reads a post about a training method combining specific breathing with bodyweight exercises, claiming that in the Misty World, recovery is enhanced and unknown substances in the air allow safe training. The post ends with an inspiring message about human resilience. Bai Yi, though skeptical, joins in the comment “Long live humans.”He starts training immediately, following the breathing and movements until his muscles tear. After sleep, he finds his Strength and Constitution have increased by 0.1, confirming the method’s effectiveness. At dawn, he approaches the Wishing Well. He has five wild fruits, five wood, five stone, some thatch, and a contaminated rabbit corpse. He throws in wild fruits one by one, receiving Moldy Bread, Purified Water, Withered Thatch, and Wood. With his last fruit, he hesitates, then exchanges wood instead. He receives a crumpled paper ball containing a blueprint for a Stone Pickaxe of Good quality. He exchanges more wood but gets only junk. He throws in stones and receives mostly worthless items. Finally, one stone exchange yields a damaged silver revolver named Shepherd’s Mercy, of Fine quality, with five shots remaining. Each shot reduces durability, which recovers one point per hour, and each bullet has a 5% chance to stun for one second. Emboldened, he tosses the contaminated rabbit corpse into the well. The water boils and churns, and a blast of air pushes back his hair. The result is not shown, but Bai Yi feels a surge of determination. Thus, Bai Yi begins his survival in the Misty Land, armed with a damaged but powerful revolver, a blueprint for a better tool, and a training regimen that steadily increases his attributes. He must balance exploration and shelter reinforcement, avoid the lurking Unseen entities and Abyssal Demons, and manage his sanity, all while competing with other players in a brutal new world. His ultimate goal remains simple: to survive, and perhaps to reclaim the strength he lost during his ten years of darkness.

While it may not achieve perfection, this novel far exceeded my expectations based on its summary. The author skillfully balances the tone, creating a narrative where survival is never too effortless, the atmosphere is never entirely despairing, yet the emotional weight of loss hits profoundly. The stakes are real, and the threat to side characters is palpable; even the death of seemingly random players generates a significant sense of grief. Within this dark and unforgiving world, there lies a glimmer of humanity, with characters exhibiting resilience akin to cockroaches, somehow managing to find humor and joy in the fleeting moments of survival. What sets this story apart from other survival narratives is its nuanced portrayal of the general populace. Unlike many tales where individuals are portrayed as either useless, unnaturally benevolent, or excessively malevolent, this narrative offers a more authentic representation of human behavior. Here, individuals with good intentions lend assistance when they are able, while those with nefarious motives seek to exploit the vulnerable. Meanwhile, there are also those who merely float along, desperate to cling to life. This story avoids the trope of moral absolutism often found in survival literature, where characters are pigeonholed into categories of "good" or "bad." Instead, they are depicted as complex human beings, defined by their choices in dire circumstances. The main character is portrayed as stoic and powerful, yet thankfully devoid of arrogance. His strength is not depicted through grandstanding; rather, it's more about his struggle to navigate human interactions. Although he often appears indifferent to relationships, this stems largely from the lack of overt narrative that delves into his emotional landscape. He doesn't provide lengthy monologues to articulate his ethical beliefs, yet when a moral line is crossed, his fury is unmistakable. I truly appreciate the author's commitment to the "show, don't tell" principle, a refreshing approach in a genre where characters often feel compelled to voice their moral compass in expository rants regarding the breakdown of modern ethics during an apocalypse. It's such a relief to engage with a story that trusts me, as a reader, to interpret depth without unnecessary explanation. I must admit, I am not adept at crafting reviews, and this critique might lead some to think, "I don't want to delve into an academic essay before bed," potentially dissuading them from reading on. Yet, if you are in search of an intriguing story centered around resource management, survival, and a compelling protagonist navigating an unusual setting, look no further. The protagonist's unique shelter provides varied advantages, and contrary to what the summary suggests, he is far from oblivious; this is anything but a lone wolf narrative. I wholeheartedly recommend this novel to anyone intrigued by its themes.

The final scene with the wishing well and the contaminated rabbit corpse building tension is a great way to end the excerpt. The well water boiling and the power of the blast hint at something big, the cut-off leaves me desperate for more. The mystery of what happens to Bai Yi and the world keeps me hooked. The author does a great job balancing cliffhangers with satisfying progression, I can’t wait to read more.

Bai Yi’s mindset is fascinating, he’s grateful for the second chance but also realistic about the dangers. His skepticism about human progress, calling others naive, indicates he’s been through a lot. Yet he still joins the “Long live Human” chant, showing he has underlying hope. This complexity makes him compelling, he never feels like a generic hero. His past trauma shapes his actions and thoughts in realistic ways.

The small worldbuilding details add realism, like the shelter having capacity units, the weather log in the logbook, and the temperature reading. The fact that daytime and nighttime have specific durations in the misty world makes it feel like a real place with rules. The consistency of rules like nighttime dangerous and daytime safe for exploration establishes credibility. These details show careful planning by the author.

I was personally engaged throughout the excerpt, the cliffhanger at the end with Bai Yi seeing outside needs resolution. The training and wishing well sequences were entertaining, and the emotional beats kept me invested. I would definitely continue reading, the story appeals to both my emotional and intellectual sides. The pacing and structure make it hard to put down.

Themes of resilience, hope, and human spirit are strong throughout, the “Long live human” post encapsulates it perfectly. Bai Yi’s journey from helplessness to active participation mirrors that theme. The idea that every crisis can lead to an upgrade is uplifting without being preachy. The world is horrific, but characters adapt and thrive, this thematic depth gives the story more weight than just pure survival, it makes me think about the real world too.
