I got attached to the characters remarkably fast. Within a few pages I care about whether Jiang Ning will make something of himself and if Jiang Li can still provide. That’s a sign of efficient emotional writing. Even unseen characters like Head Constable Feng loom large.
Sun Jian's backstory as a delivery guy who died for a minute is relatable. How many of us have been there, racing against time? His new life as a starving scholar feels even worse. The contrast between his past and this wretched existence makes the inevitable rise feel earned.
Sheng An spitting out cherry pits while Hao Jingye reads that first novel is such a mood. I hate when authors waste a perfectly good space setting on petty romance and revenge. The apocalypse is coming, focus!
The maddening thing about Gu Yanzhi is that he isn't a cartoon villain. He's a product of his environment. He genuinely thinks he's a good husband because he doesn't beat her or starve her. He brought her a pretty coral! He remembers she likes simple things! But his bar for 'good' is so low it's practically underground. He never saw her as an equal partner. That makes his failure and his shock at the divorce feel more tragic, even pathetic. He doesn't even know what he's lost. 1
Su Yueling’s reaction to everything is genuinely touching. The fact that she sent every single disciple in the sect out to look for Lu Ran and even cut short her own search to come back because she hoped for news shows how deeply loyal she is. And that line about him being lonely for a hundred thousand years, it really hits you that their bond goes beyond normal master-disciple stuff. It’s almost like found family or more, but it’s sweet and not overly forced. The moment where Lu Ran sees the Heaven Measuring Ruler and recognizes it as his handiwork, it’s such a great link between his past life and this new world. It anchors the whole chaotic re-entry into a single object.
I love that Xiao Xi has a pet hamster named Xiao Dou. It adds a touch of cuteness and companionship. The hamster comforting her when the master left was a sweet moment. And the way Xiao Dou imitates Xiao Xi when eating fries was hilarious. It's a simple but effective way to show that she's not completely alone and has something to care for. I'm glad Ye Yichen accepted Xiao Dou into the new home – it shows he respects her attachments.
There are a few details that feel off. Lu Ye’s cultivation supposedly dropped to zero after destroying himself, but then he rebuilds to Spirit Guiding sixth level in one night. Six levels in a few hours? That’s insane, even with a top-tier scripture. Feels like a cheat code.
