The pacing of the reveal is a masterclass. First, we have the village drama. Then, the interrogation. Then, the big twist: "We found him!" from the capital. Each segment raises the stakes. It's like a funnel. The story starts wide (a village murder) and then narrows drastically to one man, but then explodes outward again into a national secret. It’s addictive. I kept reading because I wanted to know why the capital was looking for him. The final scene, with the file bag, is the perfect hook. The chapter ends on a question, and I need the answer immediately. It’s exactly what a good serialized chapter should do.
1 I appreciate that Qiao Xuejun is not a pushover. She knows her worth and doesn't let the old people steamroll her. But she's also not cruel about it. When she agrees to take the potatoes at a fair price, it's strategic, not vengeful. She needs the food for survival, and she's willing to pay what it's worth, just not what they're trying to scam her for. That's reasonable.
The system manual mention of psychic powers and a space later is a huge tease. I want to know how that develops. It gives me hope that there will be more cool plot modifications, not just a one-trick pony. The upgrade path seems interesting – maybe she'll get to change whole sentences eventually.
The pace might be too fast for some, but I like it. It doesn't dwell on sad moments. Instead, it moves to the comedy and the show. That's fitting for Yan Zhizhi's character – she doesn't linger on things. The story respects her mindset by keeping the momentum.
Chen Damei is the quiet hero of this story so far. She’s the plain, older sister who gets treated like a consolation prize. But she’s the one who gives Jiang Ming the peach wood talisman for protection. She’s the one who warns him to be careful of her own family. And she’s the one who, after getting married, immediately starts planning how to make the coarse rice last through winter. She’s practical, kind, and loyal. Her backstory about her mother being driven out by the wicked Madam Chen is sad and makes you root for her. She’s definitely the best written female character in this first chunk.
