I really felt for Ruby from the start – the way she got excited just to see her family after eight years locked up, only to be treated like a trash bin. That scene at the dinner table, where they all ate and talked while she just stood there in her shabby dress, no plate, no chair – that hit hard. I wanted to scream at the king and queen. The detail about her being the "monster" even though she never did anything wrong made me mad in a good way. The author definitely nailed the emotional gut punch there.
The cheongsam description was lovely – star-sky blue with shimmering lights like wearing the entire starry sky. It really made the scene vivid. And the sapphire earrings. Tang Xu knows how to make an entrance. The stylist's praise felt real.
The Nine Saints truly thought they were hot stuff. “他们还以为能屠仙了呢”. Watching them get humbled by a literal bug is a great wake up call. It reinforces how dangerous Su Ning’s world is to them, and how lucky they are that it was him who found them instead of another predator.
The harem hierarchy is clear without needing an info sheet. The Noble Consort top, then consorts like Noble Lady Song and Wang, then palace maids like Su Zhiruan. The jealousy dynamics and power plays are established quickly. The detail that "vicious consort Virtuous Consort" is the only one willing to be the Noble Consort's lackey adds flavor. It makes the harem feel alive with complex relationships, not just cardboard villains.
