Wu Yin’s struggle with her lost spiritual power is a recurring theme. She can’t open her Spirit Mansion, she gets hungry, she feels weak. It’s refreshing that the author doesn’t let her instantly regain her powers. She has to survive like a normal human, which makes her achievements (like the fortune telling) feel more earned. The Merit Power conversion is a nice slow-burn power-up system.
The house description—three adobe rooms with a simple courtyard—paints a clear picture of rural poverty without overdoing it. I could see the cramped children’s room and feel the lack of space. The author balances enough detail to imagine the setting without boring me. It’s a solid grounding for the story.
The bonding through crystals is a creative device. It not only gives Si Shuo immediate health benefits but also establishes physical bonding later. The description of the kiss being purely for energy transfer is a clever way to initiate romantic intimacy without making it feel forced for plot. The fact that it's described clinically but still affects Si Shuo's emotions shows the author's ability to write sensual scenes without excessive sexualization. In a genre prone to rushed smut, this restraint is welcome. The future intimacy will likely be meaningful. Also, the crystals as currency opens potential for trade and conflict: hoarding them, stealing them, collecting them from kills.
It’s clear that readers should take note of the absence of a romance tag in this novel, as it offers a very different experience than one might expect if they are looking for a love story. Instead, this work shines in its comedic portrayal of ancient Chinese family dynamics, showcasing the often humorous and sometimes chaotic interactions involving multiple wives and concubines. The comedic elements stemming from the family interactions are truly a highlight of the narrative. The antics that unfold among these characters are not only amusing but also reflective of the cultural nuances of that era, which adds an extra layer of enjoyment for readers. I found myself laughing out loud at several points, as the drama and bickering really bring each scene to life in a delightful way. And let’s not forget the main character! Their sharp wit and "poisonous mouth" provide a first-class comedic experience that had me in stitches. The unexpected and often outrageous comments they make add a unique flavor to the story, making it all the more engaging. A big shoutout to the translator for their outstanding work in conveying the humor and intricacies of this tale! They have truly done a remarkable job in bringing the characters and their interactions to life for us readers. Overall, if you're looking for a lighthearted read filled with humor and an exploration of family dynamics, this novel will undoubtedly deliver on that front!
