The opening scene at the harbor is really vivid. I could practically smell the salt air and hear the chaos. But that line about the sailors wanting to "fill every hole" felt a bit too on the nose. It set the gritty, low-life tone perfectly for this part of the story, but it also made me brace for a lot more of that kind of crude humor. Thankfully, the focus shifted quickly to the mage.
The martial artist introduction was perfectly timed. Right after Chu Liang survives one crisis, we see Master Hu kill a bear with one palm—reminding us how weak the MC still is. That gap between where Chu Liang is and where he needs to be is well established. The scene where the villagers celebrate Master Hu while also acknowledging he's a land-grabber adds moral complexity. He's not a hero; he's just the strongest predator in the village.
Miao Yunyou's personality is very front-loaded. She's loud, expressive, prone to melodrama (like mourning lost fresh graduate status), but also fiercely loyal. The way she took Luo Xinglan in while covered in wounds shows she has a soft heart beneath the antics. Her decision to frame the money-making plan as "you owe me" instead of "I'll support you" is smart – it gives the cult members purpose and dignity. Also, her denial about being able to jump off the cliff earlier feels suspicious. Luo Xinglan seems to know something we don't.
Okay, the prison food transition from watery veggie broth to a full roast duck meal was so abrupt it made me laugh. It's like the author was saying, "okay, drama's over, here's your last supper." And the way Lin Chen just eats it and burps? That's a mood. I appreciate a protagonist who keeps his priorities straight, even in the face of death.
I really enjoyed the opening scene with Lin Zi settling into her new house. It was nice to see her have a backyard and a helpful robot, Yaya. The whole vibe felt welcoming but I was waiting for the other shoe to drop, given her background.
The conversation between Hao Jingye and Sheng An about ‘being friendly’ had me laughing. “She's your future colleague… be friendly. Bring enough weapons and tranquilizers. If she doesn't cooperate, take her by force.” That's my kind of friendly.
Lao Yang's stutter is an interesting character detail. It makes him feel more real and vulnerable, even though he's described as sturdy and tough-looking. I'm curious if this is setting up his backstory or just a natural trait.
The action sequences are short but vivid. The moment the delivery guy tries to bypass Su Yuan and feels a chill, freezing in place, had some good suspense. Then Su Yuan simply doesn’t move and the guy crashes or backs down? Actually the excerpt cuts off before the resolution, but that tense stalemate was well done. It shows that Su Yuan’s new skill gives him presence, even though he’s only mid-qi condensation. The system upgrade seems to have given him some aura of threat, which is cool.
