The pacing might be a bit too fast for some readers. Within two days, the protagonist goes from negotiating betrothal gifts to getting married. There's no period of adjustment or courtship. But that's probably intentional—the story is about survival and making the best of a bad situation, not a slow romance. The fast pace mirrors the urgency of the protagonist's situation. If she didn't act quickly, she'd be forced into a worse marriage. I think it works for this genre, but readers who prefer more gradual development might feel the relationship is rushed.
20. I love the little details, like Chang Ming using her fingertip to light the stove, or the hundred-year-old snow ginseng being carried to the chessboard by Golden Boy. These small moments of magic feel effortless and add to the world’s charm. They’re not over-explained. They just happen, and it makes the supernatural feel natural in this universe.
Tan Ci’s personality is so reserved that sometimes it’s hard to read him. He doesn’t express shock or fear even when he sees the accident video. He just recognizes the truth silently. That kind of controlled demeanor makes him intriguing. I want to know more about his past – how did he become disabled? What happened three years ago? And why does he have Cheng Yining’s file? There are so many questions.
2 The support characters like the female teacher and the grain boss are nice but forgettable. They serve a purpose and vanish. I hope the 60s setting brings more colorful, memorable side characters with actual personalities.
The emotional impact of the past life betrayal hits hard because of the contrast. We see a young girl who was used, poisoned, and strangled on her coronation day. Then we see her in this life, determined but not consumed by darkness. There’s a scene where she feels guilty about her maids’ future deaths, and that guilt makes her human. I like that she’s not a stone-cold killer, just a hurt woman.
The whole "I made you a bracelet because I saw Xia Yiran give one to Shen Yan" move from Su Wang is actually pretty calculated. He's subtly using Qin Qianqian's jealousy against her and she fell for it hook, line, and sinker. Smart but also kinda manipulative.
