The dialogue during the “forging challenge” scene feels very authentic. You can hear the frustration in Xu Zhou’s voice when he says “Dad, have you gone mad?” It’s not overly dramatic; it’s exactly how you’d react if someone gave you a ridiculous task with a smirk. The way he argues back and forth with his dad about the rules makes the scene feel alive. It’s the kind of petty, realistic back-and-forth that makes you feel like you’re watching real people.
In the span of a year, Xiao Xi goes from illiterate trash collector to a cultivated child who can do calligraphy, play instruments, and even cultivate. Her character development is accelerated but believable given the fantasy elements. The emotional growth from despair to hope is even more important. She starts as someone who expects rejection and ends as someone who tentatively accepts love. That arc feels earned.
The character of Su Mingyang is honestly my spirit animal. The dude is absolutely terrified the entire time, screaming "Fuck!" and "Ghost!" while falling on his face and crawling on the ground, but he's still there with the protagonist doing the dirty work. I love how he's supposed to be a big, six foot one, eighty kilogram guy, but he's just a scared kid inside when the paranormal stuff starts. His banter with the protagonist, calling him a son of a bitch while crying that he won't let him go even as a ghost, adds some much needed levity to a super dark situation. Without him, the story would be way too solemn. It gives a human, relatable anchor to balance out the protagonist's eerie lack of emotion. Their dynamic feels real, like two guys who have been in the trenches together and can bust each other's balls even when something horrifying is happening right in front of them.
Huang Hongzhong is such a slimy character. The way he switches from “kindly” giving out Immortal Pills to coldly executing those four who didn’t ascend gave me chills. And that speech about “Longevity Springs” and raising them like leeks was brutally honest. You can tell he’s done this many times before. I hope he gets what’s coming to him later.
Bai Qing’s whole "I’m too good for this charity" attitude is super grating. But in a good way? It makes me want to see her get humbled later. Her snobby reaction to the basics in the game world is funny because she clearly thinks she’s above it all, but I bet she’ll be crying for help within an hour.
The supporting characters like the policewoman who tries to comfort Qingcheng are nice touches. They show that not everyone in this world is cold. But even she can't fix the family's cruelty. Those small moments of kindness make the family's rejection sting even more.
The clan leader Ji Yunfan is an interesting side character. He’s competent, humble, and clearly cares about the family, but he’s also pragmatic enough to start planning for the worst. I hope we get more of his perspective later, especially now that Ji Haoyuan has succeeded. How will their relationship evolve?
The two slackers lying by the light stream thinking they could scam 150k were hilarious and pitiful at the same time. Their buddy talk about "Brother Long" was cringey but realistic for desperate guys. And then the rotten face monster eating them without any warning – perfect horror shift. Shows nobody is safe.
