Overall, this is a solid start. The set-up is efficient, the MC is smart and ruthless, and the system is unique. My only real fear is that the female characters will remain one-dimensional, and the village setting will be abandoned too quickly for a generic cultivation world. For now, I am very invested in seeing Zhou Chen level up and keep his cool rationality. I’d easily read another 50 chapters of this.
Song Chu's plan to win Gu Yue over and then dump him is so petty and dramatic. It shows she's not just a capable MC but also has a mischievous side. Her pride for being the village flower and wanting to make him regret rejecting her. It sets up potential for romantic development or comedy if he doesn't fall for it.
The pacing is brisk. Within two chapters we get the debt setup, MC wakes up, practices archery, goes hunting. Nothing drags. I appreciate that the author doesn’t waste time on prolonged internal monologue.
Su Mei is a surprisingly chill character for a great elder. Her approach to Lu Ran, just casually saying you can stay or leave whenever you want, is super refreshing compared to the usual pressure sects put on newcomers. She doesn’t treat him like a resource or a potential threat. She just treats him like a lost traveler. Her teasing Su Yueling about the "handsome young man" was cute too, it shows their sisterhood is genuine. You can tell she’s been dealing with Su Yueling’s devotion to her master for thousands of years and still finds it endearing. She’s a good foil to Su Yueling’s intense personality.
