Overall, this is a fantastic start to what looks like an incredibly addictive binge-read. The writing quality is high, the plot is compelling and fast-paced, the characters are immediately likeable or hatable. I am completely hooked. The way she looked at the bare ground in the imperial garden, the way she held the silver needle to trick the prince... I am so ready for her and Wei Chengyi to take on the world together.
The family dynamics in this story are painfully realistic. The Shen family publicly claims Shen Qi is their long-lost twin to save face, but privately, they give her the worst room in the house and favor Shen Baozhu at every turn. The way Xu Ailian refuses to give up the child she raised for seventeen years, while ignoring her biological daughter's needs, is so messed up. It's a classic case of wanting to have your cake and eat it too. The author doesn't shy away from showing how family can be the cruelest when they decide someone doesn't belong, even if they share blood. It makes Shen Qi's isolation feel gut-wrenching.
One minor gripe: the story explains rules like “Secondary Consort ranking” but doesn’t show them in action until conflict arises. More integration of daily manor life would help world immersion. How do meals work? How are tasks delegated? Those details feel missing, making the setting less tangible.
The romantic tension between Si Shuo and Zhi Le is understated but potent. They haven't had a long conversation, yet the understanding they share when she grabs his hand and begs him not to abandon her is powerful. Their relationship is built on non-verbal communication: his protective actions, her trusting looks. The beast shoe-making scene is a perfect example of showing care without words. I love those quiet moments. I don't need grand declarations; these small acts create a stronger bond. Also, when he bites the crystal and then kisses her, it was described clinically, but the intimacy was still there. This story uses physical contact as a substitute for dialogue, which fits the primitive setting.
