I’m curious about the four older brothers mentioned in the original book synopsis. The excerpt only hints at them, but the original tragic fates (tongue cut off, torn apart by horses…) promise a lot of drama. I hope we get to meet them soon in the main story.
One small thing that bugged me: if the wig was supposed to be a disguise, why was it so easy to snag on the carriage roof? Also, shouldn't Ruby have checked it before stepping out? But then again, she was nervous and unused to social situations after eight years locked up. I'll chalk it up to character clumsiness rather than plot convenience. It made for a funny humiliating moment anyway.
The atmosphere in this novel is surprisingly vivid for a web novel. The wedding chamber with flickering candles, the dark abandoned courtyard, the filthy bedchamber, each setting is painted clearly. The contrast between the bright wedding decorations and the decay of the prince’s room is symbolic. The author knows how to use environment to reflect character states. That’s a skill not every writer in this genre has.
The way Lin YunSheng hails a ride-hailing car even though Xie Yuchen is offering a ride is so on-brand. Some characters would make a statement about refusing the ride; Lin just calls him out on traffic violations and then gets in a regular car. The casual disrespect while still being polite is his signature move, and it's hilarious. He's not being dramatic; he just genuinely doesn't want anything to do with Xie Yuchen. That makes Xie work harder.
I’m a bit worried about how the ability will be balanced. Right now, Shen Han can only use a descriptor once after extraction, and purple text (positive) is way harder to extract than grey or white (negative). That’s a reasonable limitation. But if he can keep extracting and applying terms to random items, it could easily become overpowered. The fact that he’s already thinking about using “Simple and Easy to Learn” on advanced techniques suggests he’ll power up quickly. I hope the tension comes from external threats (the Shen family, the Su family, the imperial court) rather than him just breezing through cultivation.
The shower horror sequence was classic nightmare fuel. Flickering lights, water turning to blood, a shadowy figure just standing there watching you. It's a simple setup but executed with such tension. Chi Mu pulling the curtain at the last second was a real nail-biter. I was literally yelling at my screen for him to hurry up.
Milia actually tried to bluff Li Er with that fake oath swear. Girl had guts despite being locked up for three days. She's not just a passive damsel even if she's completely outmatched here. That moment made me hope she gets some real agency later, maybe even turns into a powerhouse that bites Li Er back for treating her like his personal emotion battery. Would serve him right honestly.
The pacing of the ghost exorcism scene was good. It built up tension with the bloody handprints and the servant boy, then Chu Yue fails, and Yan Luo steps in secretly. The "gale" that sucks the ghost into her jade plate was handled well as a mystery to the other characters. It makes Yan Luo look powerful without her having to directly show off.
