Lin Yun the college student is such a perfect victim archetype. She's naive, trusting, and completely out of her depth. The way she thought this job would be "like playing" shows she had no idea what she was getting into. I'm already worried about her.
I'm trying to guess what Shen Weiyang's long-term plan is. She says the divorce is filed, but getting a noble official to sign is clearly another matter. Is her plan just to shame him into it? Does she have another card up her sleeve? The way she sits alone, feeding sparrows, feels like she's biding her time. She has the serene patience of someone who has already made peace with the worst outcomes. She's waiting for a final checkmate. 2
The “Helian Lazy Pig” thing had me laughing out loud. Niuniu confused “Lanzhu” with “Lazy Pig” and sticks with it even after correction. It’s such a realistic kid mistake, and it lightens the mood right when things are getting sad. Plus, it gives the adults a moment of genuine laughter amid all the tears. I also love that the name actually means something—Lan for wisdom and Zhu for pearl. The irony makes it sweeter.
I worried for a second that the story would ignore the sexual violence aspect, but it doesn't. Latifa's experience is addressed directly, and the protagonist's anger is palpable. The line "This is a little unforgivable" before she kills the goblins in the back of the cave carries real weight. It acknowledges the horror without exploiting it for shock value.
