The detail about Hinami taking piano and singing lessons as a child is a nice callback. It explains why her skill is based on singing. I like that her past isn’t erased when she gets younger — she retains knowledge and techniques. That’s better than the typical “starting from zero” isekai. She might be able to use her musical training to strengthen her magic or charm people. Also, the “Light Spirit” summoned by heartfelt emotion suggests her feelings directly affect the power of the shield. That could be a way for her emotional state to matter in battles. If she’s scared or sad, the shield might be weaker. If she’s determined or happy, it might be stronger. That’s a cool mechanic.
Kozō’s personality is entertaining. He’s sarcastic, cowardly, but also cunning. His internal thoughts about enduring the old woman and then the old men are funny. He’s not a typical badass protagonist, which makes him more relatable. I hope he gets stronger soon though, because being bullied gets old.
The family dynamics within the Xie family are already rich. Xie Yuchen clearly holds power despite being the youngest – his uncle is terrified of him. Xie WeiTai slaps Xie WeiAn but also criticizes Lin for being arrogant. The uncles obviously try to manipulate Yuchen’s power for their own benefit, while he sees right through them. The way he nonchalantly says about WeiAn “I’m not worried” when Second Uncle says Yuchen should worry about him is hilarious.
This novel presents an intriguing blend of themes, notably time regression and revenge interwoven with the nuances of slice of life and the trials of a system's supplier. While the revenge arc is developing at a somewhat leisurely pace, it is the heartwarming portrayal of family bonds and their growth in the context of contemporary life that primarily fills the narrative. Readers who dive in expecting a fast-paced revenge saga may be surprised to find a gentler, more wholesome tale replete with moments of tenderness and familial love. One of the standout elements of the story is the relatability of the main character (MC). In contrast to the overly secretive protagonists often found in similar novels, she chooses to confide in her family, providing a refreshing take on the character dynamics. This openness fosters deeper connections and allows for more genuine interactions, which are a joy to witness. Furthermore, the MC's character development is commendable. She demonstrates maturity and careful decision-making, displaying growth by facing her fears, embracing calculated risks, and aspiring toward greater goals. The exploration of apocalyptic and ancient world narratives is equally commendable. Instead of resorting to ruthlessness or following the typical ‘might makes right’ trope, the MC focuses on cultivating win-win situations for the native inhabitants of those worlds, reflecting a more compassionate approach to challenges. However, the novel does not shy away from more controversial themes. A darker thread runs through the story, particularly concerning the traumatic experiences faced by the MC's previous timeline or parallel past self, which includes heinous crimes. This aspect adds depth and complexity to her character, as she navigates the emotional aftermath of such events while striving to forge a better path in her current life. Overall, while readers might find the pacing slower than expected for a revenge-oriented novel, it is the rich character exploration, heartfelt family dynamics, and a unique take on familiar tropes that make this book a compelling read. As the story unfolds, it cleverly balances sweet moments of familial love with the darker undertones of its premise, creating a tapestry of emotions that resonates deeply.
