I appreciate that the story doesn't try to make the protagonist look too clever too fast. Yes, he spots Li Yi's disguise, but he's also completely wrong about some things. He assumes Li Yi is a Han Dark Guard when he's actually Qin. He assumes his situation is hopeless when there's actually a political play already in motion. That mix of accurate intuition and genuine misunderstanding makes him feel like a real person trying to navigate a world he barely understands.
I feel a lot of empathy for Tadano. He just wants to live a quiet life, but the world keeps pushing him toward participation. The pressure of deadlines (innkeeper) and his own hunger force him to act. That feeling of being dragged into things against your will is very relatable. It’s like Monday morning every day.
I’m invested in whether Lin Xiaojiu and Shen Lian will genuinely start caring for each other or just part ways after Shen Lian recovers. The ambiguity makes me want to keep reading.
