I felt for Li Wei when he was lying on the grass after the information overload, not knowing what to do. The emptiness of the grassland and his despair came through. I've felt that way moving to a new place, but this is another world with no help. His helplessness is very relatable.
1 The banknote system? Having silver be both currency and a conduit for yuan qi is a clever way to blend magic and economy. It explains why the shop assistant reacted so strongly—Shen Xing basically flashed a fortune. It’s a small but meaningful detail that makes the fantasy world feel logical rather than arbitrary. Good thoughtful worldbuilding there.
The noodle shop lady’s behavior made me raise an eyebrow. She stares at Lin Tian’s chest, her eyes “sparkling,” and then her son shows up with a fish. The subtext was a bit heavy-handed. But I guess it’s setting up either comic relief or a potential ally. Still, it felt out of place in a scene that was otherwise about renting a place.
The emotional whiplash of the cub being abused then rescued then wanting to return to her abusers is giving me anxiety but in a good narrative sense. I trust that Wu Qiuqiu has a plan because she's shown herself to be pragmatic. I just hope the fathers don't think she's being ungrateful and actually let her explain her reasoning. Communication would solve so many story conflicts. 2
The story's opening hook is strong: a mysterious writer who talks to readers and uses their input to kill ghosts. That's a unique premise that sells the novel. The execution, with its rapid pace and dark humor, keeps me turning pages. But I worry about long-term sustainability if every ghost is solved the same way.
I really like the relationship between Jian Ni, Lan Bao, and Rui Bu Si. They're all clueless Earthlings together, so they naturally form a bond. Jian Ni is the loud, slightly arrogant guy who gets himself into trouble but with a good heart. Lan Bao is the soft, emotional sidekick. And Rui Bu Si is the jaded, secretly powerful addition who has to play along with their antics. Their group feels like a classic shonen trio: the hothead, the softy, and the mysterious strategist. I'm looking forward to seeing how Rui Bu Si's hidden strength will surface and how she'll either save them or get them in more trouble.
