I genuinely feel so bad for Liz. She's flawed and arrogant, but she just got hit by a truck of self-awareness and then immediately got pressured into an engagement she didn't really want, by a prince she now fears. She's realizing she's a pawn in Wilfred's game narrative and in Alan's political game.
This story has a great mix of horror and comedy. Youxiang becoming a zombie but being vain and petty is funny. The scene where she’s angry at Qin Zhuo for yelling, then hides behind him when Chen Yunfei aims a gun – that’s a quick mood swing. And her thought process about not wanting Qin Zhuo to become a zombie because he’d compete for “most beautiful and smartest zombie” – that’s hilarious internal logic. It never gets too dark because of her personality.
The writing flows smoothly. Descriptions are vivid without being too lengthy: the mud covering them, the small clinic, the family dinner table. The dialogues feel authentic to the setting, with people speaking in provincial ways. There's a hint of translation style but it's fine. I can picture the scenes clearly.
The girls trying to kidnap the cat while the cat is literally just there for the free canned food is hilarious, the disconnect between their noble intentions of giving him a home and his complete lack of interest in being adopted is comedy gold, especially when he bolts with the can still in his mouth.
