That opening scene with the imperial decree being read out was brutal. The way the women in the Huainan Marquis mansion completely lost their shit, wailing and begging, felt so real. And then you have Yuan Ziyou, disguised as a disfigured kitchen maid, just standing there with a faint smile – that contrast is chilling. You can tell she’s been through hell and back, and this is her moment of victory. The general, Huo Xifei, showing up and trying to take her away, his desperation, and her rejecting him because she’s poisoned herself – heart-wrenching. It sets up the whole tragedy and rebirth perfectly.
The opening scene with Ronnie falling into the glacier crevice and getting impaled by an ice pillar is brutal but oddly hilarious. The way he just casually breaks off a piece of the ice pillar, eats it, and complains it’s not as good as a Popsicle is such a mood. It immediately sets the tone that this guy is not your typical protagonist so just checked out of life and is going with the flow. I was honestly more invested in his reaction to dying than the actual death scene.
Ngl I was lowkey disappointed the Dragon Ancestor showed up instead of Elder Yan. The way Tian Ning's eyes lit up when she saw the fire dragon, and how she was like "I love raising unique one-in-a-million anomalies" had me thinking we were getting a fun chaotic contract. But the dragon ancestor? That's a whole different level of problem.
The author is good at chapter cliffhangers, like the slapping’s open end to Ulanara’s reaction. But overall chapter endings resolved quickly, like the poison reveal. I want more lingering uncertainty to keep me flipping pages. The tension peaks in scenes but fades between them.
The summoner awakening ranking system is familiar but with a twist. F to SSS tiers, then ten realms from Bronze to Apocalypse, each with ten tiers. But the examples are ridiculous – Wang Zhihe becomes a "Dung Maker" (literally shit maker?), Ke Zhendong a "Hallucinationist," Cang Jingkong an "Emotional Mentor." These are such bizarre non-combat professions. I'm genuinely curious if there's any actual combat use for a Korean Cuisine Chef. The randomness feels either like a parody of webnovel systems or a joke I'm not fully getting.
I wonder about the system's origin. It says "Apocalypse Fortress · All-Purpose RV System". So the original world had an apocalypse? That might explain why the MC had the RV modified with weapons and supplies. But she still died? The backstory is intriguing. I hope the author explores it. Maybe the system is from a different timeline or something.
Some of the translation phrasing feels a bit stiff in places. "This little kitten is quite cute, coming right up to rub against my hand" reads a little awkwardly, but it doesn't break immersion too badly overall
This novel is truly a delightful escape into a whimsical world filled with charm and warmth. It is fun, cute, and fluffy – and yes, I use the word "fun" again because it encapsulates the essence of this story perfectly. While it may not break new ground in terms of plot or character complexity, it offers a thoroughly enjoyable reading experience that is sure to bring a smile to your face. The lighthearted nature of the narrative, combined with endearing characters, makes for a cozy read that you might find yourself revisiting time and again. However, the story does hit a bump with the age-dissonance that becomes apparent as the plot unfolds. This aspect might distract some readers from the overall charm of the tale, as it raises questions about the relationships and dynamics presented. Despite this minor flaw, I still consider the book a good read overall. It has a certain allure that keeps you engaged and entertained, making it an ideal choice for those looking for a light and enjoyable story. If you're in search of something uplifting that touches the heart, this novel might just be the perfect choice!
Overall impression: it’s engaging but has translation quirks. I’m invested in Xiao Yu’s struggle and want to see how she copes with poverty and the crow. Hope it doesn’t turn too supernatural.
The side characters like the foreman Hopkin and the officers White and Flora are a bit flat so far. Hopkin is just a bully, and the officers are stoic bodyguards. I hope they get more depth later. Frank the butler is already more interesting with his ingratiating smile. He seems like he'll be a kiss-up or a backstabber. I'm watching him closely.
