I felt for Su Luo when she said she has no home and no mother. That line hits hard. And when she tries to hold back tears in front of Huo Tingyan, you can feel her fear of being abandoned again. For a child character to evoke that much sympathy in such a short time is good writing. Even though the situation is fantastical, the emotion is real. I found myself rooting for her to win over this cold man. It’s a classic daddy-daughter bonding story with a supernatural twist.
2 The tension is building nicely. We know the apocalypse is coming in ten days, but right now everyone is just living normal lives. The contrast between Qiao Xuejun's frantic preparation and the oblivious world around her creates a really compelling atmosphere. It reminds me of those disaster movies where the protagonist knows something terrible is about to happen and no one believes them.
One small detail that stuck with me is the teacup scene. The maid not only knows Zashuria’s preferred drink but also the exact temperature and sugar amount. That level of preparation is both impressive and terrifying—it shows the palace has done extensive background research on her. It’s a great way to show how outmatched she is. Every time she visits, she’s confronted with something that undermines her confidence. The way she mentally notes “the Royal Family is scary” becomes a running gag but also a genuine threat.
The description of Lu Ye’s small courtyard and the servant area is vivid. The dust, the musty smell, and the remote location paint a picture of neglect. It’s a clear metaphor for his status. But the fact that it’s relatively clean, thanks to servants, shows the Jiang family still does bare-minimum maintenance. This attention to environmental detail helps immerse me in the story. Lu Ye’s reaction to seeing it is also on point—he compares it to his thatched hut and finds it an upgrade. It shows his practical mindset.
The magic system is hinted at but not fully explained. I’m curious about the leveling system – Mo Han is level 18, Feixue is level 9 Are there clear power tiers? The ice crystals that protect him are interesting. I hope the novel elaborates on how magic works and the society of mages. The school aspect mentioned by Bing Ling suggests we might get some systematic learning later. Also, the ghost magic Feixue mentions sounds intriguing – will Mo Han learn that?
