Overall, I’d give this first part a solid 7/ It’s entertaining, has a strong hook, and sets up a clear path forward. The humor and horror mix well. I’ll definitely keep reading to see how Mos evolves from a little rat to something more.
I’m really digging the way Wen Wan just sits back and eats melon seeds while everyone else is scrambling to get pregnant. That whole “I’m done with overtime in my past life, now I just want to chill” attitude is so relatable. It’s like the author took every burned-out worker’s fantasy and dropped it into an ancient setting. The way she doesn’t care about the concubine drama feels refreshing, not like some noble act, just pure survival instinct. Actually made me laugh when she figures out the Taoist’s riddle before anyone else and then just shrugs it off.
1 I need to mention the dialogue style. It’s pretty direct and doesn’t overuse pompous cultivation speech. For example, when Ling Xiaofeng explains the rules, he says things like “The Tai Xu Sect is not your babysitter.” That feels modern and accessible. It’s not like those novels where every conversation is draped in flowery metaphors. This makes the story easier to read and more engaging for people like me who don’t want to decode ancient sayings every paragraph. The modern reader voice of the narration is a plus.
The cliffhanger about the MC not knowing her inner voice is public is delicious. I can already imagine the scenarios: she will think something scandalous about a minister and he’ll hear it. Or she’ll accidentally reveal state secrets. The dramatic irony is killing me in a good way. I am definitely going to keep reading to see when she finds out and how she reacts. Will she be mortified? Will she weaponize it? Can’t wait.
The description of the mansion and the soldiers’ suspicion of Youki feels realistic for a fantasy setting. A random dude showing up at a noble’s house would raise flags. Cecilia’s assertive "lower your spears" demonstrates her authority. I liked how this moment showed her capable side, not just a love interest.
