I love how Xin Banyue's special ability manifests. Tumi flowers growing from her wound and the petals absorbing the poison? That's visually stunning. The description of the purple-black flowers and vines breaking through her skin is creepy and beautiful at the same time. It's a nice twist on the standard wood element ability – instead of control over plants, her body itself becomes the source of these mutant flowers. Very unique.
2 The way the story handles the theme of motherhood is really compelling. It’s not just about revenge; it’s about reclaiming her role as a mother. Her son is her motivation, her reason for fighting. It’s a nice change from the usual cold revenge queen trope. She’s still soft for her baby.
Furen is adorable and badass at the same time. She's only three but already uses fairies to protect her mama. The moment she throws a fairy at Guilford and says "enemies will be annihilated" had me laughing out loud. Little princess knows how to set boundaries.
The Detective, Li Gang, is also a solid character. He’s the professional. He does his job without the Chief’s extreme bias. He even did the research on the medal. He’s the perfect foil for the Chief. The Chief is all emotion and instinct (until the end), while Li Gang is observant and logical. Their dynamic works well. "I saw a Major General wearing it." That one line from Li Gang is what starts the whole house of cards falling. Without his calm observation, the Chief would have just processed the case incorrectly. I'm hoping Li Gang gets more to do as the story goes on. He's the audience surrogate. He's smart, capable, and knows when to keep his mouth shut.
The humor in this is so dark yet so fitting. "Even goblins are dissing me" made me snort. The protagonist's self-deprecating inner monologue prevents the story from becoming too grim. It balances the horror of being in a world where goblins eat humans and violate women with a sense of irony that keeps you reading. You can't help but like her voice.
That moment when Jiliu Jia gets hit by the fireball and Xu Shanrou counters with water, and it’s implied she’s at the Demon level now—that was a cool twist. I didn’t expect her to be that strong, especially since she’s blind and young. But her strong reaction to protect him, even though she can’t see, makes her feel so capable. It also sets up this interesting dynamic where the “weaker” guy is being shielded by the “weaker” girl, which plays into his pride issues later.
Seo Lili, the teacher who looks and acts like a middle schooler but can stop time, is a hilarious subversion of the dangerous educator trope. Her weapon being a pink toy bear that shoots lasers is absurd, but it works because the whole school is absurd. The way she cries crocodile tears while ordering the class to fight shows how twisted this place is. She’s a perfect example of the “cute on the outside, deadly on the inside” archetype done well.
