The world feels lived-in. Ducking into the Wild Boar Forest, talking about the Kaifeng Prefecture escort officers, throwing in canonical Water Margin characters. The writer clearly knows the source material and uses it to add weight to every scene. Even the random mention of “Dry Land Hulü Zhu Gui” makes me smile because I know who that is. For newcomers, the references might be too dense, but for a fan like me, it’s pure fan service. I’d love more expanded lore about the Eight Hundred Li Water Marsh though.
Niuniu’s self-introduction as “Helian Lazy Pig” gets funnier every time it’s repeated. The first time with her uncle, then again at the family dinner. It breaks the ice and makes everyone laugh. It’s a great character quirk that humanizes her beyond the tragedy. And the fact that the grandmother still calls her that endearingly… it makes me feel like this family will eventually heal around this kid.
20. The MC’s business acumen is a nice touch. Starting a clothing store chain with ready-made and custom Su embroidery feels realistic and shows she’s using modern ideas in a historical setting. It’s not overdone either. Just one side hustle to keep her busy.
1 Her showing up to work looking like death and just saying she has "low blood sugar" felt so real. It's what you say when you're actually falling apart but can't tell anyone. You just have to soldier on.
