The dialogue is so snappy and modern. "What do you see in me?" "Your filial piety." "I don't believe it." *Hands over money.* "I believe now." There is no beating around the bush. It's a direct mercenary relationship being established. I respect that. It cuts away all the annoying "this great treasure is the destiny of heaven" nonsense and just cuts a check.
Alright, the "running away from home" arc is a bit predictably scripted. His cards being frozen? Of course they were. It’s a little too convenient for the plot. But the part where he picks a random city on the map was a nice touch. It captures that feeling of just wanting to disappear, to go anywhere where no one knows your name. It’s the classic "aimless runaway" fantasy. But you just know he's about to get a harsh dose of reality.
The train scene was a nice breather between the high tension of the family hall and the introduction of the newbie dungeon. Gu Chen thinking about the long distance and the energy crystal trains kept the worldbuilding organic. I liked the small touch about the sunset being blood red—fits the dark mood.
I was a bit disappointed that the Twelve Ancestral Witches and the Three Pure Ones were just mentioned in passing and then they left. They are huge figures in the mythos, but here they appear and then disappear without any interaction with Lin Yu. I guess it makes sense since Lin Yu was just a bead at the distance, but I wanted a glimpse of their personalities. The description of the three Pure Ones as one old, one middle-aged, one youth was brief but intriguing. Maybe they'll meet later.
2 The double epiphany scene—Shen Shuangyu touching the golden text and realizing it’s real, then Ye Qing seeing Shen Shuangyu react—is a solid magical realism moment. The connection between fiction and reality becomes literal, making the reading experience feel interactive.
Yue Shen spitting blood from trying to divine the golden list is brutal. The fact that just looking at it almost kills her tells you right away that this thing is beyond mortal comprehension. And Donghuang Taiyi showing up with his own failed divination—his Black Tortoise jade tablet turning to dust—really drives home how terrifying the list is. I like that even the top-tier characters are powerless here.
