I'm impressed by the subtle horror elements: the idea that the Taoist recruitment is a scam, that children are taken and never seen again, that the red-robed woman sees Wei Xing as a "delicacy". The transformation of the woman in the dream from seductive to feral ghost was genuinely unsettling. The story's tone is darker than most xianxia I've read. It feels more like a grimdark fantasy with cultivation trappings. I hope it maintains this edge.
This story is addictive for a casual read. The chapters flow quickly, the trials are engaging, and the protagonist is charismatic. I found myself wanting to know what happens next, especially in the fourth trial which we didn't get to see. Good hook.
The detail about the complete corpse in the sewer being a Strange Dream "container" is interesting. Matt mentions that even mosquito-like monsters wouldn't leave a fresh corpse intact, so the corpse being perfect suggests it's from another reality. The gunner later confirms he was looking for Strange Dreams specifically. This implies that Strange Dreams can be accessed through certain points or objects, and the sewer was just one of many possible portals. That concept has a lot of potential.
Ming Songlan is a great side character. She’s competent, no-nonsense, and has a dry sense of humor. When she peels an apple for Su Yang while explaining the world’s dangers, it’s such a mundane gesture that grounds the craziness. And her grabbing her own kangaroo tail to prove it’s real was iconic. I hope she sticks around as a mentor figure. She’s got that cool big sister energy.
I have to say the fireball skill balance feels way off. 1000% damage at level 1? The original skill does 130% damage with 1 second cast. After blessing, it’s 1000% plus instant cast. That makes every other skill in the game look pathetic. I know it’s the MC’s cheat, but other players wouldn’t stand a chance even if they had legendary gear. Maybe later the game introduces enemies with massive magic resistance or immunities. I hope there’s some kind of limitation, like the blessing can’t be reapplied or it eats up a resource. Otherwise, the difficulty curve could flatten too much.
