Yang Xuanshuang's entrance is pure drama. The full black outfit, the cold demeanor, the immediate suspicion. She looks and acts like a queen. She doesn't fall into Ao Tian's arms immediately; she interrogates him. This tells me she has been the protector of this orphanage for a long time and has seen some stuff. I love a competent female character.
I'm not gonna lie, the scene where the two jade bones fight over the tiger white bone and one loses and turns into bones just like that? That really drives home how disposable even higher-ranked skeletons can be. And no one reacting to it? That's a cold world indeed. Gives me Game of Thrones vibes but with bones.
The scene where Si Yuchuan points the gun at Banyue's heart is intense. The finger on the trigger, the veins bulging, the cold eyes – you can feel the threat is real. And when she asks if she's still the ninth sister he swore to protect, and he doesn't give a straight answer? That's character assassination. He's not the same person she once looked up to. The trauma of the apocalypse has turned him into someone who prioritizes efficiency over loyalty.
The dialogue feels expository sometimes. Characters explain their situations too clearly, like Chu Qingcheng's entire life story in one speech. But it gets the information across fast, which is fine for a fast-paced read.
I enjoyed the back-and-forth between Zhang Qian and Chen Cheng. Their banter feels natural for a mismatched duo. Even when it’s silly, it keeps the energy up. I’d like more scenes where they actually work together instead of just bickering.
The writing style is very straightforward but not dry. Sentences like "The Gobi Desert was synonymous with desolation and barrenness" are simple yet evocative. The English translation feels natural—no jarring phrases that scream "machine translation."
The interest rate on the debt is hilariously evil. One yuan per day on a sixty-two yuan debt? That's like 600% annual interest. Du Qingyang is basically running a loan shark operation from the 1980s. And the villagers are all like "yeah that's fair, you should pay back immediately." Nobody questions her math. The Zhu family is so doomed. It's a tiny detail that shows how she uses her modern knowledge to twist things in her favor while staying within the setting.
