Can we appreciate how Shen Ning handled the Granny Gui situation? She didn't just kill her—she staged the whole thing perfectly. Dressed Granny Gui in her clothes, put her own hairpin in her hair, left the body in the carriage so Xie Xuanchen would "save" the wrong person. That's next-level strategic thinking. She's using her knowledge of the original plot against the people who created it. The irony of Xie Xuanchen getting injured trying to save a dead old woman is just *chef's kiss*.
Overall, this is shaping up to be a satisfying revenge-and-survival story with a competent, motivated protagonist. The setup is thorough without being tedious, the magic system is intriguing, and the villains are hateable enough to make victory taste sweet. I’m definitely continuing this one.
The manner of Wen Hao's previous death—stabbed multiple times in a snowy street after narrowly escaping an assassin—makes me think there's a power at play that's still around in the new timeline. She knows she has enemies, and she has to move carefully. The fact that she suspects her father might be connected to her sister's death is chilling. I like that she doesn't immediately trust anyone, not even Prince Jing's son, despite his seeming kindness now.
1 I actually appreciate that the MC doesn’t immediately return to Qingyun City all powerful and start blasting. He’s taking his time, gathering a little money, dropping a hit. That feels more realistic for a revenge story. He’s not invincible yet, just strong enough to bully low-tier thugs. That makes the upcoming confrontation with Yang Liancheng more tense.
Mu Yao is a surprisingly fun side character so far. She goes from being an unconscious damsel to a chatty companion in no time. Her calling Lu Ran a pervert for staring at the sect master is such a funny dynamic shift. It shows she’s got personality and doesn’t just exist to be a plot device for the Yuan Yang star connection. She feels like she’ll be a good bridge character who can help Lu Ran navigate the Spirit Realm’s social rules, even if he’s way more powerful than anyone suspects. Her presence makes the early sect scenes way less lonely for him.
1 The mention of Wudang, Shaolin, Five Peaks Sword Sect, and Sun Moon Holy Cult makes it clear this is set in the same universe as the Condor Trilogy. Using the timeline where Zhang Cuishan is already dead and the Heaven Reliant Sword is with Wudang places it right before the events of Heavenly Sword and Dragon Slaying Sabre. That’s smart – it allows the author to use familiar characters like Zhou Zhiruo while creating an original story with the MC. I’m eager to see if the original plot will be derailed.
