The way Shen Wan handles Xiao Jingheng is maternal but not overly sweet. She "wipes blood from the corner of his mouth with her sleeve" and throws him into the car. She's rough but caring. It's a unique dynamic. He's traumatized and distrustful, but also grateful. I feel for him. The line where he says "This King may be down on his luck, but I will not suffer such humiliation!" is so dramatic.
The mother wolf's back being described as "soft and warm" really sells the comfort Lin Xiaoxiao finds in her new family. After a lifetime of stressful surgery and a sudden death, getting to ride on a giant wolf through the forest while being shielded from the cold wind? That sounds like a weirdly peaceful afterlife. The sensory details - the fur, the wind, the warmth - are well done and grounding.
I'm already guessing that the brother's rebirth will be the key to changing their fate. He knows what happened in the original story, so he'll probably try to steer them away from destruction. It adds a layer of meta-awareness that enhances the family drama.
I'm annoyed that the story ends this segment just before the golden dot encounter. Cliffhanger city. But at least it's a natural break. I'd binge the next chapters if they were released together.
