Shen Ning's ankle injury is a great detail. Usually in rebirth stories, the MC comes back and immediately becomes super competent without any physical limitations. But here, she hurts herself jumping from the carriage and has to limp back to the temple. That small weakness makes her more human and relatable. She's not invincible just because she has knowledge from a past life. Her body is still fragile and her plans can still go wrong. Realistic stakes.
The supporting cast, like Yan Ruyi and Yan Xiao, feel like real villagers with small-town pettiness. Yan Ruyi’s complaint about not wanting to become a "Black Girl" is so shallow and believable. These characters add texture to the world without stealing focus.
As a translator, I can confidently say that it was a true labor of love that prompted me to reach out to the original translator, pleading to help with the project to expedite the translation of this captivating light novel. This particular work is not only a thrilling story that has captivated my heart but also the very one that inspired me to dive into the world of translations in the first place. It holds a special place in my journey as a translator. For all the readers out there, I urge you to keep going—this story is a treasure trove of delight! The creativity and incredible inventions that Su Nuan Nuan brings into this world are nothing short of mesmerizing. Her culinary skills create not only a feast for the characters but also for the readers’ imaginations. Now, I’ve noticed some chatter regarding the harem aspect of this novel. Yes, on the surface, it may seem like your typical harem setup, but let's delve a little deeper. Imagine being transplanted into a harem while grappling with near starvation—it's not just a whimsical twist but inherently traumatic. Su Nuan Nuan, a passionate foodie who has yet to experience romantic entanglements, brings a refreshingly pragmatic attitude toward her situation. I find her somewhat indifferent stance towards her husband's harem to be a relatable and realistic response, especially considering the challenges she faces. To those who appreciate culinary adventures and delightful escapism, stay for the food! This novel will take you on a gourmet journey filled with delectable dishes and innovative creations that can make anyone salivate. And just a little tease for what's to come...
Okay, this opening is actually pretty funny. The heroine Lin Lang gets the original owner's memories and her first reaction is to slap her thigh and call the original owner an idiot for wasting her top-tier resources on a man. I was cackling because honestly, she's not wrong. The original owner had the Empress as an aunt, the Chancellor as a dad, and could walk sideways in the capital, but she chose to be a doormat for some guy. I'm already rooting for Lin Lang just for that attitude.
The action sequence when Kozō charges at the Slug Sage is both silly and brave. Twenty meters tall against four hundred meters? That’s like a mosquito attacking a building. I appreciate the attempt at showing his determination, but it’s also funny how easily he gets swatted away into the summoning array.
1 I really like the concept of the contract being a binding spirit agreement that can’t be broken. It adds real stakes. This isn’t just a simple “help me and I’ll pay you” deal. It’s fate-binding. And the fact that Chang Ming warns him about the backlash implies she expects him to try to break it at some point. That foreshadowing is interesting. I wonder if Yun Yichu will be tempted to go back on his word.
