The concept of using fortune telling to earn a meal is very human. She’s not above taking payment in food, which shows she’s grounded. And when she tells the restaurant boss his reading costs a thousand, it’s clear she has a standard rate even in scarcity. That consistency is good for worldbuilding. I also like that she doesn’t haggle or beg, she just presents her sign.
2 The part where Qin Bai says he'll "bite the door open with his teeth" if he had to pay for the dowry himself is so relatable. The mental image of him gnawing at the door is ridiculous, but it's the kind of hyperbolic thought anyone would have when faced with a list of insane demands.
Black City is legit creepy. The red shattered moon that never moves, the gray fog, the abandoned pits and half-dead creatures—it's giving Bloodborne meets Dark Souls vibes. The way the environment is described (cracks spitting hot and cold air, corroded water, filth everywhere) makes it feel like a place that's actively dying. The atmosphere alone makes me want to explore more, even though Karl hates going there.
Duo Duo is such a sweet kid. The scene where she refuses the big chicken leg because “it’s too big” but accepts a tiny piece? That broke my heart and made me smile at the same time. It’s a small moment but it shows the author knows how to write real human emotions.
