The opening scene at the river is so eerily specific. The sound of water, no one there, just a white tail vanishing into the bamboo. You just *know* she was marked from that moment. Great sensory hook that immediately sets a creepy folk horror tone.
The Empress Dowager is such a well-written antagonist so far. She’s not cartoonishly evil—she’s cold, calculating, and patient. The way she treats Zhou An like a temporary placeholder while she consolidates power feels realistic for a power-hungry regent. The bit where she talks about wanting a stable dynasty, not a dying one? That’s the kind of villain motivation I can actually respect.
The scene where the Peng Family realizes that the number one Hidden Dragon is THEIR Peng Feng is the best dramatic irony in the text. They think he is just a lazy good-for-nothing! The disconnect between his public persona and the reality of the rankings is huge. The family is probably going to be completely flabbergasted when they realize they have a monster genius in their midst.
I wish we saw more of Jiang Ruohua's father and grandfather. They're mentioned as influential but absent, which is a bit of a cop-out. I get that it's to give her space to act alone, but their presence would have added weight to the family tension. Still, the setup is promising, and I'm curious if they'll show up later
I really appreciate that the system doesn't solve everything. Lu Che still has to physically move and plan. He can't just press a button and win. He has to think about location, marketing, and logistics. It feels more like a strategy game than a cheat code generator.
