Laurence is the manager and leader of the Golden Sands Caravan. His caravan is attacked by bandits and then taken by Rhode, who claims it as spoils of war. Laurence is forced to work under Rhode, first compiling a goods list and then collecting taxes from the wealthy farmers. He is skilled in accounts and initially bitter, but enjoys the power of tax collection. Rhode reduces his ransom if he performs well.
