Later, it is mentioned that Ouyang Xiu recommended Mei Yaochen for an official post. He is also noted to be compiling the New Book of Tang. He represents the highest level of officialdom and literary authority that scholars like Su Xun and Mei Yaochen seek to impress. His absence from the narrative deepens the frustration of Su Xun and sets the stage for the family’s interactions.
