Lu Zheng's life changes dramatically after his parents, a university professor and a writer, are presumed dead in a shipwreck. He inherits over ten million yuan in savings, a villa, and three apartments near Canglan University. Though originally planning postgraduate studies, he decides to idle away his time. However, he honors his parents' requirement of completing at least ten blind dates each year. During one such date arranged by an agency, he meets Song Yubi, a postgraduate student at Canglan University. She loudly declares she is not materialistic, yet demands a bride price of eight hundred and eighty thousand yuan, insists on household chores being outsourced to a maid, and requires him to hand over his bank cards. When Lu Zheng counters each demand, she becomes flustered and eventually angry, accusing him of not seizing the opportunity. Lu Zheng pays the bill and leaves. Afterward, Song Yubi exposes his personal information online and spreads rumors in university groups, calling him a cheapskate. Many 'sisters' support her. She then turns to her admirers who treat her to meals and buy her gifts.

The apocalypse begins shortly. Sinkholes erupt across the city, releasing black mist that swiftly rises to the fourth floor. Monsters appear: Scythe Bugs with sharp blades for forelimbs and Twin-tailed Scorpions with powerful tails. Lu Zheng, safe in his above-ground apartment, immediately buys large quantities of non-perishable food and water, and charges his power banks. A light screen appears before him: the Shelter System. This system rewards him with Infinite Material Cards for successfully sheltering women who meet the criteria of being virtuous, kind, beautiful, and intelligent. Meeting two criteria yields a basic card, three an advanced card, and four an extraordinary card. These cards grant unlimited supplies. Lu Zheng realizes the system can filter out undesirable people and decides to use it to secure his survival.

While his phone still works, Lu Zheng posts on forums and class groups, offering shelter to kind and beautiful survivors. The post immediately attracts hostility. Song Yubi and her supporters call him a disgusting man unwilling to pay for a meal. The student union chairman Liu Mingyang publicly agrees with the need for shelter but demands Lu Zheng bring his supplies to the teaching building for distribution. Others privately demand supplies. Lu Zheng blocks the hostile ones and continues to spread his message, creating multiple accounts to avoid being removed from groups. He is confident that when food and water run out, people will come.

Three days pass. The black mist stops rising. The city falls silent. Explosions become rare. People begin to understand the severity of the situation. Online messages change from insults to pleas. Lu Zheng receives a friend request from Gu Lingyue, the highly-respected associate professor in the Biology Department and the most beautiful woman on campus. The system analyzes her and confirms she meets all four requirements: she has talent, moral character, beauty, and wisdom. Gu Lingyue, together with her student Gu Mantang, has run out of food. She politely asks to borrow supplies, promising to repay double or to enter the black mist to find food herself. Lu Zheng declines to lend. He states that if she wants supplies, she must come to his home and become part of his shelter. Gu Lingyue hesitates, still too proud to accept immediately.

Soon after, Yu Zihan, a first-year postgraduate in the Chinese Department and Song Yubi's roommate, sends a friend request. The system evaluates her as possessing virtuous conduct and beautiful appearance, meeting two criteria. Unlike Song Yubi, Yu Zihan is careful with her reputation and physically fit. She messages Lu Zheng with flattery, immediately expressing admiration and hinting that she would like to join him. However, she also probes how many supplies he has. Lu Zheng shows her photos of his full refrigerator and cabinets. When she asks him to deliver supplies, he refuses and sets a condition: she must come to his apartment within three days, and after that deadline, she will not be accepted. He makes it clear that he is not looking for a romantic relationship but for survivors to shelter under his terms. Yu Zihan is torn. She does not want to risk the journey through the mist, especially after seeing evidence of monsters, but her supplies are nearly gone. She also does not want to share Lu Zheng's resources with Song Yubi.

Meanwhile, Song Yubi remains in her dormitory, unaware that Yu Zihan has contacted Lu Zheng. She sends him a voice message demanding immediate delivery of all his supplies to her building, giving him a last chance to pursue her. Lu Zheng reads the notification and deletes her without opening the message. Song Yubi is furious when she sees the red friend verification notice. She tries to enlist another admirer, Li Chao, who previously delivered food by drone but lost the drone. She asks him to run to her dorm on foot. Li Chao attempts the journey through the black mist but is ambushed by a Scythe Bug. A video recorded by another survivor shows him being killed and eaten. Song Yubi watches the video in their group chat and screams. Yu Zihan rushes out to see the footage and realizes the true danger.

Now Yu Zihan must make a decision. Even if she wants to go to Lu Zheng, the path is only a hundred meters away but crawling with monsters. Gu Lingyue also faces starvation. She has not contacted Lu Zheng again, but her pride is crumbling as hunger grows. Lu Zheng waits in his apartment, secure with supplies for a month and the knowledge that the system will supply unlimited resources once he shelters qualified women. The story reaches a point where each survivor ponders their next move, caught between the threat of the mist and the necessity of submitting to Lu Zheng's shelter conditions.

Overall, this is a solid start to what could be an interesting survival harem story with a twist. The system filter for character quality is a smart way to avoid the typical "damsels in distress who are just there to be saved" archetype. I'm invested enough to see who actually shows up at Lu Zheng's door.

One minor complaint: the way Lu Zheng instantly believes the system and accepts the apocalypse feels too easy. Most people would be in denial for days, maybe weeks. He just rolls with it. A bit of internal struggle or disbelief would make his acceptance more believable.

I'm curious about the world beyond Canglan University. Are other cities also experiencing sinkholes? Is there any government response? The story mentions global catastrophe, but we only see the local area. Expanding the scope could add depth, but keeping it focused on the campus also works for tension.

The narrative voice is straightforward and unpretentious. It reads like a web novel with clear, direct prose. Not fancy, but functional. The dialogue is sharp and carries most of the character work. It's easy to binge-read because the sentences are short and chapters move fast.

The "infinite material card" mechanic is a bit vague. How does it work? Does it summon food out of thin air? Does it create supplies from nothing? I'm hoping the author explains the limits and applications soon, because it seems like it could break tension if not balanced properly.

The story's message about people's true colors in crisis is clear. Song Yubi crumbles into desperation. Yu Zihan becomes calculating. Gu Lingyue tries to maintain principles. Lu Zheng evolves from passive to proactive. The apocalypse strips away social masks and reveals who people really are. I'm curious to see more characters.
