Yeah, if you like fast-paced LitRPG apocalypses, this is it. It skips the boring parts. The system is unique. The potential for character drama is huge. It's a solid binge read so far. The author knows exactly what buttons to push for the target audience.
The writing style for the action is surprisingly cinematic. The scene where the MC shoots the bug's leg off to save Yurou was timed perfectly. Tight framing. “Bang!” Pop pop pop!” Great sound effects in my head. I could picture the apartment hallway fight. The tension was palpable.
I need to know who the main heroine is. The book is pushing Yurou hard, but the dynamic with Chen Yanyan is a classic “enemies to allies” (or enemies to lovers) setup. The MC is 24, she is 3 The “older woman” trope is so hot. The real story is relationship management in the apocalypse.
The Appraisal skill is my favorite part. Getting to read the “evaluation” flavor text of items is so satisfying. “This is a crudely made replica gun”, “Sturdy Human female” lol. The dry humor in the System's narration is a hidden gem. It breaks the tension just enough.
The base stats make sense. HP 10/1 The world isn't giving out godly powers on day one. Everyone is frail. It grounds the story in a deadly reality. If a bug bites you, you die. The stakes are real. The MC leveling up only gives +2 HP, so it's slow progression.
Chen Yanyan is definitely going to be a liability or a traitor. She is described as “a very practical person” who knows what she should do. In a horny apocalypse book, she might become the third wheel. In a serious one, she might steal the gun. I am scared for her, but in a fun way.
I honestly thought the “worms from the construction site” were going to be earthworm based. The Red Armored Beetle being a distinct creature makes the world feel bigger. The source of the horde is still a mystery. What else is coming? The evolutionary link between the pit worms and the beetles is good monster design.
The Helicopter setup at Haicheng University is giving me heavy *The Walking Dead* season 1 CDC vibes. It's a clear goal with a ticking clock. I am 99% sure something is going to go wrong when they get there, but I am totally along for the ride. The survival race is on.
The ammo limitation is great. 12 bullets. “Bullet Recovery” of 1 per hour. The MC has to aim carefully. He can't just go full John Wick. This prevents the system from being too overpowered early. Every bullet counts. The scarcity makes the “Upgrade Points” far more valuable than just random XP.
One small nitpick: how did Lin Youzhi get a gun and a secret stash? The story explains he does construction and is connected, but a loaded pistol in the study? This implies he was already involved in some shady stuff. Good set-up for a flashback or character depth. Maybe he was in on the alien threat already?
The tower defense game the MC played feels like a tutorial. The game literally has the same concept as the new world. Star Sea Insect Tide. This is either the MC's “Gamer's Body” manifesting, or the system downloaded the world settings from his mind. Chekhov's Mobile Game. I bet the upgrade mechanics are similar.
“Federation Government Emergency Notice!” This suggests the world is somewhat united politically. It avoids the messy politics of real-world nations collapsing. Clean approach for a LitRPG post apoc. Gives a clear goal. “Coastal major cities” are attacked. This means the whole world is falling, not just a single country.
