Leng Chujiu arrived late at the Tianfu Sect disciple recruitment ceremony. A direct disciple named Jiang Jiangjiang introduced the four trials. After testing her spiritual power on a crystal ball, she revealed both a supreme Fire Spirit Root and a rare Wind Spirit Root, along with an imperceptible hidden attribute. The sect elders watched from the shadows and immediately began arguing over who would take her as a disciple. She received her token and proceeded to the second trial, climbing five thousand staircases within three hours. She handled the climb with surprising ease, soon catching up with other youngsters. During a break, she met Bai Nannuan, a wealthy girl who struggled with the stairs. Later, a confrontation with Song Qingqing, who called her a beggar, was defused by Jiang Jiangjiang. Leng Chujiu apologized and offered to wash Song Qingqing’s clothes. The third trial required crossing a dangerous cliff via a suspension bridge while eagles and crows attacked the candidates. Many gave up. Leng Chujiu cleverly taunted the birds, ate her steamed buns in front of them, and threatened to pluck their feathers and stew them. She grabbed an eagle’s claws after it swooped down, climbed onto its back, plucked some feathers, and forced it to carry her across the bridge. The other candidates quickly rushed across while the eagles were stunned. The fourth trial was another staircase that applied heavy spiritual pressure. Most candidates were pushed back after a few steps. Bai Nannuan and Song Qingqing struggled under the pressure. Leng Chujiu ran up the stairs without feeling the weight, quickly reaching five hundred steps, then two thousand steps, where she finally slowed down but continued upward with ease. Her remarkable performance astonished the elders and her peers alike. Her goal was to cultivate immortality and one day ascend to the legendary suspended continent. The trials continued, and she remained determined to press forward despite any obstacles.

I am thoroughly entertained by this excerpt. It's not going to win literary awards, but it doesn't need to. It delivers exactly what it promised: a fun, over-the-top power fantasy with a heroine who talks back to spirit beasts and climbs eagles. I'll definitely be reading more.

This story is addictive for a casual read. The chapters flow quickly, the trials are engaging, and the protagonist is charismatic. I found myself wanting to know what happens next, especially in the fourth trial which we didn't get to see. Good hook.

One logical issue: How did Leng know the eagles would just throw them off and not kill them? She guessed they had orders, but it was a risky assumption. If the eagles had decided to drop her from high up, she could have been seriously hurt. Then again, the trial rules seem to prevent harm, so maybe it's safe.

The fact that Leng climbed the eagle's back by grabbing its claws and then pulled its feathers to control it – that's not something a normal twelve-year-old would do. But that's why she's the protagonist. She's resourceful and fearless. I admire that even if it's unrealistic.

I'm curious about the other characters who passed the trials. We only focus on Leng, Bai, and Song. The story mentions over a thousand people remain, but we barely see them. I hope the author gives attention to some side characters to make the world feel more alive.

The humor in this excerpt is spot-on. From Leng's taunting of the birds to the elders squabbling, I found myself grinning multiple times. The tone is light without being silly. It knows when to be serious (the bridge description) and when to joke.
