Fang Bai forced himself to calm down. A zombie was banging on his security door, but it could not break through. He knew he had to deal with it eventually to leave. He searched his home for weapons, finding a kitchen knife and a fruit knife. He fashioned a wooden spear by sharpening a mop handle and slightly carbonizing the tip. He also created makeshift armor: a raincoat stuffed with textbooks as paper armor, a thick military coat, plastic rain boots, and a pot lid wrapped with books as a shield. Armed with the spear, he opened the door. The zombie lunged in but got trapped in the gap. Fang Bai thrust the spear through its eye socket, killing it instantly. A white light rose from the zombie and merged into him, representing experience points. He realized zombies were weak but infectious, and killing them required destroying the head. He decided to acquire a recurve bow for ranged combat but noted the archery club across the road was surrounded by zombies.
Fang Bai checked his supplies: food for a month, water stored. He then examined the notebook again, and the attribute panel now showed "Name: Mage Apprentice's Manuscript" with the description "Records the inheritance of a mage. Use it to change your profession to Mage." The requirements were level ten and fifteen mental power. Fang Bai became determined to level up and change his profession to mage, believing it would bring great rewards even if society stabilized. He gathered a claw hammer about forty centimeters long as a weapon. He tested it on the zombie corpse, shattering the skull easily. He found a key to the opposite apartment and searched it, finding food and water but no useful items. He left them there and continued down the stairs, confirming each floor's doors were closed.
On the seventh floor, he heard chewing sounds. A zombie appeared. Fang Bai blocked its hands with his shield and swung the claw hammer at its temple, killing it with one blow. The zombie dropped a copper coin, which the panel indicated could be used for transactions. Fang Bai returned home to check his panel after this kill. His level was now one, and he had one free attribute point. He added it to mental power, raising it to nine. He felt increased mental agility. He decided to prioritize mental power to meet the class change requirement. He then went out again to hunt more zombies, as he suspected zombies would grow stronger over time by devouring flesh. He killed another zombie on the stairs, which dropped cloth boots that increased agility by one. He equipped them, and his agility rose to five. He understood that agility affected nerve reaction speed rather than movement speed. Continuing, he found a motorcycle helmet in a sixth-floor apartment, providing full protection. He equipped it along with his other gear. He searched the apartment, finding more food and a medical first-aid kit, which he took home.
Fang Bai checked his experience bar and estimated nine more kills would level him up again. He went downstairs and killed another zombie on the third floor, which only dropped a copper coin and a set of keys. He reached the ground floor entrance. The building was quiet, but outside, a supermarket was surrounded by at least seventeen zombies, including several paralyzed ones. He knew it was too dangerous to approach. He decided to enter the adjacent building, which had its access control propped open. As he entered, a low growl sounded and a dark shadow pounced at him with a stench.
