Fang Bai discovered a worn notebook with an imitation leather cover in his home. The cover was scribbled with words, and the two characters in the middle were too blurry to make out. Based on the contents, he guessed it was a notebook, but he could not understand the text and symbols inside. Looking at it for too long made him dizzy. He set it aside and continued sorting old items. Suddenly, he fainted, hearing a mechanical voice and crashing sounds before losing consciousness. When he woke up, an attribute panel appeared before his eyes, showing his level as zero, strength six, constitution five, agility four, and mental power eight. He then noticed car crashes outside and saw people fighting. Using his phone to zoom in, he realized they were zombies. Zombies were devouring people, and the victims turned into zombies themselves. The apocalypse had arrived globally.

Fang Bai forced himself to calm down. A zombie was banging on his security door, but it could not break through. He knew he had to deal with it eventually to leave. He searched his home for weapons, finding a kitchen knife and a fruit knife. He fashioned a wooden spear by sharpening a mop handle and slightly carbonizing the tip. He also created makeshift armor: a raincoat stuffed with textbooks as paper armor, a thick military coat, plastic rain boots, and a pot lid wrapped with books as a shield. Armed with the spear, he opened the door. The zombie lunged in but got trapped in the gap. Fang Bai thrust the spear through its eye socket, killing it instantly. A white light rose from the zombie and merged into him, representing experience points. He realized zombies were weak but infectious, and killing them required destroying the head. He decided to acquire a recurve bow for ranged combat but noted the archery club across the road was surrounded by zombies.

Fang Bai checked his supplies: food for a month, water stored. He then examined the notebook again, and the attribute panel now showed "Name: Mage Apprentice's Manuscript" with the description "Records the inheritance of a mage. Use it to change your profession to Mage." The requirements were level ten and fifteen mental power. Fang Bai became determined to level up and change his profession to mage, believing it would bring great rewards even if society stabilized. He gathered a claw hammer about forty centimeters long as a weapon. He tested it on the zombie corpse, shattering the skull easily. He found a key to the opposite apartment and searched it, finding food and water but no useful items. He left them there and continued down the stairs, confirming each floor's doors were closed.

On the seventh floor, he heard chewing sounds. A zombie appeared. Fang Bai blocked its hands with his shield and swung the claw hammer at its temple, killing it with one blow. The zombie dropped a copper coin, which the panel indicated could be used for transactions. Fang Bai returned home to check his panel after this kill. His level was now one, and he had one free attribute point. He added it to mental power, raising it to nine. He felt increased mental agility. He decided to prioritize mental power to meet the class change requirement. He then went out again to hunt more zombies, as he suspected zombies would grow stronger over time by devouring flesh. He killed another zombie on the stairs, which dropped cloth boots that increased agility by one. He equipped them, and his agility rose to five. He understood that agility affected nerve reaction speed rather than movement speed. Continuing, he found a motorcycle helmet in a sixth-floor apartment, providing full protection. He equipped it along with his other gear. He searched the apartment, finding more food and a medical first-aid kit, which he took home.

Fang Bai checked his experience bar and estimated nine more kills would level him up again. He went downstairs and killed another zombie on the third floor, which only dropped a copper coin and a set of keys. He reached the ground floor entrance. The building was quiet, but outside, a supermarket was surrounded by at least seventeen zombies, including several paralyzed ones. He knew it was too dangerous to approach. He decided to enter the adjacent building, which had its access control propped open. As he entered, a low growl sounded and a dark shadow pounced at him with a stench.

Initially, I found the novel to be quite engaging, particularly for the first thirty chapters, where the story showed promise and a captivating premise. However, my enthusiasm quickly waned as the narrative took a sharp turn downhill. The plot became overwhelmingly dominated by intricate magic theories—over 90% of the content revolved around concepts like spell nodes and spell structures. It’s worth noting that the protagonist hasn't faced a single zombie in what feels like a hundred chapters, which is baffling given the apocalyptic setting of the story. Moreover, the once intriguing system that appeared to be an overpowered (OP) golden finger has gradually lost its significance. What promised to be a unique and exciting element has now devolved into a somewhat obsolete feature, diminishing my initial excitement for the narrative. If the storyline had continued to unfold with the same energy that gripped me at the beginning, I would have rated the book much higher. Unfortunately, the necessity of paying to unlock chapters only to discover how tedious and monotonous the progression has become felt like a frustrating endeavor. In a recent update, the protagonist has inexplicably started teaching everyone around him how to wield magic, which he once considered his trump card. This peculiar turn of events seems to stem from his "loneliness" and desire for companions to explore the intricacies of magic—despite the dire apocalypse surrounding them. Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that this character has previously been outmaneuvered by spell scrolls of his own making, raising the question of his competence. If the plot armor that protects the main character were to falter, it’s clear he would have met his end multiple times by now, potentially at his own hands no less. In light of these developments, my interest in the story fizzled out completely, leading me to drop the novel entirely before I suffered further disappointment. It’s a shame, really, as it had so much potential at the outset.

Overall, this is a solid start to a system apocalypse story. The zombie threat feels real, the protagonist is relatable, and the power progression is satisfying. I just hope the author keeps the stakes high and doesn't let Fang Bai become overpowered too quickly. The journey to level 10 should be a grind, and I'm here for it.

The neighbor's apartment being empty was a little too convenient. I was hoping for a tense moment where he has to clear a room or deal with a surprise zombie. Instead, it was just a free loot room. It felt like a missed opportunity for some extra tension.

I'm a little skeptical about the mage class. It sounds cool, but I'm worried it might make the game too easy. If he becomes a mage and starts casting spells, the grounded survival horror vibe might disappear. I hope the author keeps a balance between magic and survival.

The zombie growth mechanic is a great way to keep the pressure on. If they get stronger over time or by eating, then Fang Bai has a real incentive to level up fast. It turns the apocalypse into a race against time, which keeps the pacing tight and the stakes high.

The author does a good job of showing Fang Bai's thought process. We get his reasoning for every decision, from the armor to the weapon choice. It makes the story feel like a survival guide as much as a novel, which is a fun blend.
