Peng Feng, a 1.8-meter-tall young man with sword-like eyebrows and bright eyes, transmigrated into the Northern Song Dynasty, a world that outwardly mirrors history but secretly possesses powerful martial artists capable of splitting mountains and breaking seas. He was reborn into a ninth-rate martial family known as the Five Tigers Broken Door Saber Peng Family. Unlike a common civilian, Peng Feng was determined to practice martial arts and soon discovered he was a monstrous genius unseen in a thousand years. He learned any martial art instantly and experienced enlightenment every few days. After more than ten years of cultivation, at only seventeen years old, his strength had reached the fifth level of the fourth major realm, the Diamond Realm, far surpassing his own sect leader who was only at the fifth level of the second major realm, the Innate Realm. Despite his explosive power, Peng Feng kept a low profile, only revealing the strength of a sixth-level Acquired Realm weakling to his family. His only goal was to stay hidden and cultivate until he reached the Land Immortal Realm or beyond, believing that only those who remained hidden and lived longest were the ultimate winners.

One day, while drinking wine and leaning lazily on a wooden corridor, golden lights appeared in the sky above all cities in the Great Song with populations over 300,000. A voice announced itself as the Heavenly Dao of Great Song, declaring three rankings: the Hidden Dragon List for youths under twenty-five, the Earth List for experts below Land Immortal, and the Heaven List for all Land Immortals of Great Song. These lists were to be revealed in three days. A Celestial Phenomenon Realm grandmaster who attacked the golden light was severely injured by the counterforce, and even the Land Immortal State Preceptor Lin Lingsu confirmed that the ranking was beyond any Land Immortal, possibly created by the true Heavenly Dao. Everyone began speculating about the top spot on the Hidden Dragon List. Among the young talents, Cai Yun, son of Chancellor Cai Jing, cultivated the Fire Phoenix True Scripture and reached the eighth level of the Acquired Realm. He arrogantly declared that the first place was destined for him. In the Western Route Army, Zhong Hao, son of Grand Marshal Zhong Shidao, mastered the Great Divine Demon Skill and reached the half-step Divine Strength Realm, also wanting first place. His sister Zhong Hongluan encouraged him. In the capital, Li Qingzhao, the famous poetess and martial arts genius, had also attained the eighth level of the Acquired Realm and confidently claimed she would secure the top spot to prove women could dominate. Peng Feng, upon seeing the Heavenly Dao ranks, realized that his true cultivation level would now be exposed; he had been planning to stay low until he became a Land Immortal, but the ranking could reveal him.

On the third day, the Hidden Dragon List was announced. The first place was Peng Feng, origin: Five Tigers Broken Door Saber Peng Family, age seventeen. Second was Zhong Hao, third Li Qingzhao, fourth Cai Yun, and the list continued with other names such as Su Yuluo, Zhao Bing, and Song Jiang. The entire Great Song was stunned. No one had ever heard of this Peng Feng. Investigation showed the Five Tigers Broken Door Saber Peng Family was merely a ninth-rate sect with a low-level saber technique. Cai Yun was furious that a nobody from a ninth-rate sect had taken his rightful first place and vowed to defeat him. Li Qingzhao was dumbfounded and also wanted to challenge him to prove herself, but was confined to the capital by her parents. Zhong Hao was excited to find someone stronger but was unable to leave due to military duties against the Western Xia. Meanwhile, the Western Xia Emperor Chongzong learned of the Great Song Hidden Dragon List. Realizing Peng Feng's potential to become a great expert if allowed to grow, he ordered the First Rank Hall to send assassins to eliminate this peerless genius.

Three days after the list release, Peng Feng was training in his room, aiming to break through to the sixth level of the Diamond Realm. Suddenly, screams came from outside. He rushed to find two disabled old men—one missing a left hand and one missing a left foot—who had seriously injured more than ten disciples of the Peng family. They identified themselves as Earthly Defect and Earthly Imperfection, assassins from the Western Xia First Rank Hall. They had come specifically for Peng Feng. Peng Feng confronted them, determined to face these assassins head-on. Now, the conflict that Peng Feng had long tried to avoid was upon him as the world recognized his genius and powerful enemies moved to end his life.

I have a genuine appreciation for main characters (MCs) who either experience rapid growth or start off as exceptionally strong. There’s something undeniably appealing about watching them tackle challenges head-on with their impressive abilities. However, I must admit that this approach can lead to a rather weak narrative structure. The lack of tension is palpable, as there's often little at stake when the protagonist is already a powerhouse. In such cases, the onus falls on the writing to elevate the story. Unfortunately, this particular novel doesn't quite meet that standard. While the narrative isn't poorly constructed, it suffers from an average or perhaps even slightly below-average level of writing. This shortcoming makes it difficult for the plot to truly engage the reader. An intricately woven narrative filled with depth and emotion is crucial when the stakes are low; otherwise, the story can feel flat and unremarkable. In conclusion, while I am drawn to the idea of strong characters, I find that the execution in this novel lacks the necessary finesse and depth to keep the tension alive and enthrall the reader. It’s a missed opportunity that leaves one wanting more from the story and its characters.

This novel can be succinctly encapsulated in a few impactful lines, yet its layers of storytelling and character development make for a rich narrative experience. Just when everyone believed that Peng Feng was destined to meet his downfall, the plot takes an unexpected and thrilling turn. He didn’t merely succumb to defeat; instead, he rises against adversity, defying all odds and expectations. That's the essence of it—a tale of resilience, persistence, and the surprising twists that life can present in even the direst situations. As the story unfolds, readers are taken on an exhilarating journey where each character, especially Peng Feng, is meticulously crafted and comes alive with hopes, dreams, and daunting challenges. The build-up of tension and the intricacies of the relationships add depth to what might initially seem like a straightforward premise. Furthermore, the novel delves into themes of hope and the indomitable human spirit, making it not only an engaging read but also an inspiring one. It challenges the common notion of defeat, showing that there is always a glimmer of possibility, even in the bleakest of circumstances. So, while the summary may be simple, the full experience is anything but. As you delve deeper into the narrative, you find yourselves immersed in a world where the unexpected is the norm, and resilience takes center stage. It’s a compelling reminder that, much like life, the most captivating stories often come from the most unlikely triumphs. Adventure awaits, and you're bound to be captivated by how Peng Feng navigates his path. The narrative is filled with surprises that keep you on the edge of your seat, making this novel a true gem worth exploring.

The pace is just too fast—way too fast! It's overwhelming, to say the least. One of the most glaring issues is the excessive amount of information dumped all at once. Instead of immersing us in a well-crafted narrative, it often feels like we're merely skimming through an outline or a bullet-point list. If the author had invested a bit more time and effort into fleshing out these key points—taking a moment to breathe and allow the reader to digest the unfolding events—it would surely enhance the reading experience. However, I must admit that the plot has potential. Despite the familiar trope of an overpowered main character, there are glimmers of intrigue that could develop into something worthwhile. One can only hope that the pacing improves as the story progresses! But alas, a future update reveals a disappointing truth: it does not get better! If you are searching for a captivating and engaging read, I strongly recommend looking elsewhere. On the other hand, if you’re an adventurous soul who enjoys navigating through a daunting challenge, just prepare yourself to switch off your brain and take the plunge. The journey may be arduous, lacking the depth and nuance we so often cherish in literature. Proceed with caution!

Overall, this is the definition of a guilty pleasure read. It scratches the itch for a completely overpowered protagonist while having a great sense of humor about the genre tropes. The historical setting adds a unique flavor that most Xianxia lacks. I am completely invested in Peng Feng's struggle to stay anonymous while the entire world tries to uncover his secrets. Highly enjoyable.

For what comes next, I am looking forward to the fight with the assassins. Peng Feng is probably going to wipe them out fast, but the damage to the sect might force him to reveal a bit of his power. I also really hope the story doesn't forget about Li Qingzhao and Zhong Hao. Their journeys to find Peng Feng could be a great story arc. The setup for a tournament arc or a series of challenges is really strong.

The humor balance is the best part of the novel. It doesn't take itself completely seriously, but it isn't a straight-up parody. It maintains legitimate stakes and cool action, while still letting the MC be a goofy paranoid hermit. Cracking jokes about "Black Tiger Pounces on the Heart" while setting up a Western Xia assassination plot is a tricky line to walk, and the author does it well.
