The ending of this excerpt leaves me with so many questions. What happens to Zhu Jiajia? Is Zhou Peiyu going to be the key to a cure? How will the school respond to the outbreak? And what role does Li Wenli play in all of this? I need the next chapter immediately. This story has me completely hooked with its blend of romance, horror, and mystery. Definitely going to recommend it to friends who like dark stories.

The humor in this story, like Zhou Peiyu's Left 4 Dead reference when he saw Zhu Jiajia by the lake or his internal panic about paying for the hotel room, helps balance the horror. If it were all doom and gloom, it would be exhausting. These moments of levity make the characters feel more human and the terror more bearable. Plus, Zhou Peiyu's self-deprecating jokes about being poor are relatable.

The toxic masculinity from Yang Likai was infuriating but realistic. His entitlement, his aggressive cursing, his assumption that he can do whatever he wants because he's rich. The way he treated Zhu Jiajia like property, then chased her down when she didn't behave how he expected. I hated him from the first line he spoke. Good villains are easy to hate, and Yang Likai is definitely easy to hate.

The school setting adds to the claustrophobic feel. Dorms, classrooms, medical clinics, lakes, all familiar places that should be safe, now turned into potential death traps. The fact that it happened during evening classes when students are stuck in routines makes it worse. No one knows what's happening while they're studying. By morning, half the campus could be infected.

I'm skeptical about Dr. Pu's motives. She's obviously brilliant and dedicated to her work, but her excitement about Zhou Peiyu's antibodies felt predatory. She asked for a second blood sample without fully explaining the risks. In a horror story, the scientist who discovers the key to the cure is either the hero or the mad scientist who experiments on people. I'm not sure which one she is yet.

The chapter breaks and cliffhangers are addictive. Every time I thought I could put the book down, another twist happened. The cannibalism scene at the end of one chapter made me immediately start the next. The pacing is relentless, no filler, just constant escalation of stakes. I've been reading for hours and I don't want to stop. This is the type of story that keeps you up at night.

The author's description of physical transformation is visceral. The swollen pustules, the deep red ulcerations, the black pus, the rancid smell. I could almost imagine the stench described. It's disgusting but effective horror writing. The contrast between Zhu Jiajia's original beauty and her current grotesque form makes the horror more tragic. She was literally consumed by the disease.

Li Wenli's role in this story is still unclear, but her sudden appearance at the medical clinic makes me think she's going to be important. She was eating an apple like nothing was happening while chaos erupted around her. That kind of detachment is either very stupid or very calculated. I'm leaning towards calculated. She might know more about what's going on than she lets on.

I'm worried about the other students in the infirmary. Those five people lying on the beds with flushed faces, they must have been infected by Zhu Jiajia's mutated spores or something. If this spreads through the campus, it's going to be a massacre. The school is probably not prepared for a biohazard outbreak, especially one that turns people into cannibals. I hope someone calls the authorities soon.

The romance angle is still there but completely twisted. Zhou Peiyu and Zhu Jiajia's one-night stand was supposed to be a romantic moment, but now it's a biohazard. The fact that he's immune but she's turning into a monster creates a tragic romantic tension. Can he save her? Does he even want to after what she did? Their relationship went from strangers to intimacy to horror in a day.

I'm getting major Parasite vibes from this story, but not the movie, the virus type. The way the infection progresses so rapidly and causes violent behavior is reminiscent of zombie media. But the syphilis twist makes it unique. I haven't seen a story use an STI as the basis for an outbreak before. That's a clever way to add social stigma and personal shame to the horror.

The medical details about syphilis and the mutations seem well-researched or at least convincingly written. The stages, the symptoms, the transmission methods. It adds a layer of realism to the horror. Dr. Pu's professional breakdown of the infection process made me feel like I was learning something while being terrified. Although I have no idea if the science is accurate, it sounded plausible enough to scare me.
