Zhou Peiyu is a poor junior at Jingyang University, abandoned by his divorced parents and forced to work part-time jobs to pay for tuition and living expenses. To earn quick money, he volunteers as a drug tester at the City First People’s Hospital, receiving an injection of an experimental antibody called “Mei Li Ting,” designed to provide immunity against syphilis. The payment is five thousand yuan, and he survives the trial with no immediate side effects.Returning to campus, Zhou Peiyu stumbles upon the school beauty Zhu Jiajia standing by the lake, preparing to jump. He stops her and learns she is being harassed by the wealthy playboy Yang Likai, who pursued her relentlessly and spread humiliating photos on the school forum. Yang Likai appears with his lackeys, but Zhou Peiyu fights him off and drags Zhu Jiajia to a cheap hotel outside the school to hide. Inside the room, Zhu Jiajia, desperate and afraid, seduces Zhou Peiyu and they spend the night together. The next morning, Zhu Jiajia collapses with severe symptoms: her skin is covered with red patches, and she has a high fever. Zhou Peiyu carries her to the campus clinic, where Dr. Park Chaeyoung, a brilliant medical professor, examines her. To her shock, Zhu Jiajia is suffering from stage three syphilis combined with a mutating hemolytic virus, a condition that should take years to develop but has erupted overnight. Zhou Peiyu’s blood is also tested, revealing that while he was infected with the same syphilis strain, the experimental antibodies from the drug test are actively killing the virus in his bloodstream. His blood acts as a natural antidote.Dr. Pu administers penicillin to suppress Zhu Jiajia’s condition, but the infection continues to worsen. That evening, Zhou Peiyu returns to the clinic to check on her only to find a commotion. Zhu Jiajia has awakened in a deranged state, physically attacking a female student and biting her neck in what appears to be cannibalism. Her body is now covered with swollen pustules leaking black pus, and she exudes a putrid stench. Dr. Pu screams that the syphilis has mutated into an extremely contagious strain, and direct contact is dangerous. Multiple students who were near her are already showing signs of illness.Zhou Peiyu’s unique immunity becomes crucial, but the situation spirals out of control as the infected Zhu Jiajia becomes a threat to the entire campus. His deskmate Li Wenli arrives at the clinic and witnesses the horror, as chaos erupts around them. The story follows Zhou Peiyu’s struggle to survive this outbreak while grappling with the consequences of his drug experiment and his unexpected role as the key to stopping the epidemic. The conflict between Yang Likai, Zhu Jiajia’s hidden secrets, and the rapid spread of the mutated disease force Zhou Peiyu to confront the dark realities behind the campus beauty’s fall and the dangerous biological weapon brewing within his own blood.

The ending of this excerpt leaves me with so many questions. What happens to Zhu Jiajia? Is Zhou Peiyu going to be the key to a cure? How will the school respond to the outbreak? And what role does Li Wenli play in all of this? I need the next chapter immediately. This story has me completely hooked with its blend of romance, horror, and mystery. Definitely going to recommend it to friends who like dark stories.

The humor in this story, like Zhou Peiyu's Left 4 Dead reference when he saw Zhu Jiajia by the lake or his internal panic about paying for the hotel room, helps balance the horror. If it were all doom and gloom, it would be exhausting. These moments of levity make the characters feel more human and the terror more bearable. Plus, Zhou Peiyu's self-deprecating jokes about being poor are relatable.

The toxic masculinity from Yang Likai was infuriating but realistic. His entitlement, his aggressive cursing, his assumption that he can do whatever he wants because he's rich. The way he treated Zhu Jiajia like property, then chased her down when she didn't behave how he expected. I hated him from the first line he spoke. Good villains are easy to hate, and Yang Likai is definitely easy to hate.

The school setting adds to the claustrophobic feel. Dorms, classrooms, medical clinics, lakes, all familiar places that should be safe, now turned into potential death traps. The fact that it happened during evening classes when students are stuck in routines makes it worse. No one knows what's happening while they're studying. By morning, half the campus could be infected.

I'm skeptical about Dr. Pu's motives. She's obviously brilliant and dedicated to her work, but her excitement about Zhou Peiyu's antibodies felt predatory. She asked for a second blood sample without fully explaining the risks. In a horror story, the scientist who discovers the key to the cure is either the hero or the mad scientist who experiments on people. I'm not sure which one she is yet.

The chapter breaks and cliffhangers are addictive. Every time I thought I could put the book down, another twist happened. The cannibalism scene at the end of one chapter made me immediately start the next. The pacing is relentless, no filler, just constant escalation of stakes. I've been reading for hours and I don't want to stop. This is the type of story that keeps you up at night.
