Jiliu Jia, a fourteen-year-old boy in Nitan Town, lacks a magic attribute, making him unable to condense demonic power and earning him the label of waste. He lives with his grandfather Qing Xiaoyao, a physician of hidden strength, and Xu Shanrou, a thirteen-year-old blind girl rescued by Qing Xiaoyao as a child. Xu Shanrou possesses a water attribute and has reached the demon level after her second rebirth, while Jiliu Jia has not even achieved the one-turn demon yuan level. Despite his weakness, Jiliu Jia has a violent temper and often fights, but he is devoted to Xu Shanrou, who cares for him deeply. During the annual Herbal Medicine Trade Fair, Li Tai, the arrogant grandson of the Li clan leader Li Aotian, a five-turn great demon master, bullies Jiliu Jia and insults Xu Shanrou. Li Tai, a two-turn demon three-star with fire attribute, attacks Jiliu Jia, and when Xu Shanrou intervenes with her water magic, a brief clash occurs, but she is overpowered. Jiliu Jia, enraged by the insults, repeatedly attacks Li Tai, even hitting him with a rock and drawing blood, but is beaten badly. The fight attracts a crowd, and Ouyang Yanfei and Ouyang Yanbo from Cangling City arrive. Ouyang Yanbo, a spiritual master with wind attribute, uses a wind cloud to stop the battle and separates the combatants, then leaves with his sister. Returning home, Xu Shanrou treats Jiliu Jia's wounds with a Blue Butterfly Flower, a rare herb Qing Xiaoyao cherishes. When Qing Xiaoyao discovers the herb wasted, he scolds Jiliu Jia and goes out to find him. Fearing punishment, Jiliu Jia sneaks into Xiqi Mountain at night to gather more Blue Butterfly Flowers. He is familiar with the mountain but ventures deeper than ever. Following a Thousand-Legged Turtle, he hopes to find green lotus, but the turtle is eaten by a Three-Colored Poisonous Python, and Jiliu Jia becomes lost. After wandering for hours, he encounters a young Giant Spiked Lizard, which chases him, followed by its adult mother, a five-meter-tall lizard that speaks. The adult lizard attacks Jiliu Jia, forcing him to flee to the edge of a bottomless valley. Trapped, Jiliu Jia faces a choice between jumping or being killed by the lizard. The excerpt ends at this critical moment. Throughout the story, the cultivation system is defined by rebirth ranks: first rebirth yuan, second rebirth zhe, third rebirth jun, fourth rebirth shi, fifth rebirth da shi, sixth rebirth wang, seventh rebirth zong, eighth rebirth zun, ninth rebirth sheng, tenth rebirth zhong. Pill grades range from lower to top, each with seven patterns, and pharmacists hold higher status than physicians among mages. Jiliu Jia's lack of magic attribute marks him as an outcast in Nitan Town, where even his efforts to study medical books and set up a herb stall are mocked. His only solace is Xu Shanrou, who despite her blindness has developed keen senses and strong mental maturity. The conflict with Li Tai underscores the social hierarchy based on magical talent, while the intervention of Ouyang Yanbo hints at a larger world of powerful cultivators. Qing Xiaoyao's hidden identity as a true strongman suggests a deeper backstory yet to be revealed. Jiliu Jia's reckless courage and determination to protect Xu Shanrou drive his actions, while his night journey into Xiqi Mountain demonstrates his survival skills and knowledge of herbs, though his lack of power leaves him vulnerable to beasts like the Giant Spiked Lizard. The story sets up Jiliu Jia's struggle against his inherent deficiency and his desperate attempts to carve a place in a world that rejects him.

I really love how the story kicks off with this herbal medicine trade fair—it sets this vibrant, bustling scene that feels alive. The description of Nitan Town backed by mountains gives it such a solid sense of place, like you can smell the herbs and hear the crowd. The whole Jiliu Jia starting off reading a yellowed medical book makes him feel like this quiet, overlooked kid right from the start, which contrasts so hard with his later outbursts. It’s a classic underdog setup but the details, like him not even knowing he’s a reincarnated soul, add this extra layer of mystery. I was hooked on the atmosphere alone before the drama even started.

Xu Shanrou being blind but still described with such vivid, poetic detail—her “three thousand azure silks” and her deep, profound gaze—just hits different. It’s like her blindness makes her more perceptive in other ways, and that contrast between her fragile appearance and her quick, instinctive reactions later on during the fight makes her feel layered. I also love how she calls him “Little Jia Brother” with that soft, protective tone. Really makes you root for their dynamic from the get-go.

Okay, the whole “Jiliu Jia died instantly in his previous life and got reborn here” premise is wild but handled with such casual brevity that it doesn’t overshadow the plot. I appreciate that the author doesn’t dwell on it too much—it’s just a fact that frames his lack of magic attribute and his outsider status. It makes his frustration feel even more raw, like he’s been dealt a bad hand twice in two lifetimes. That kind of subtle tragedy is the kind of thing that makes me want to keep reading.

Li Tai’s arrogance and his family’s background with the Li clan being rich and powerful feels like a classic bully archetype, but the detail about his grandfather being a Five-Turn Great Demon Master adds genuine threat. It’s not just teen drama—there’s real consequences if Jiliu Jia pisses off the wrong family. I like that the bullying isn’t just petty; it’s backed by a whole system of wealth and strength. Makes the conflict feel bigger than just a street fight.

The explanation about magic power attributes and how everyone has one except Jiliu Jia is such a brutal worldbuilding point. It’s not just that he’s weak—he’s literally cut off from the entire system that defines power in this world. That kind of inherent disadvantage makes every small victory feel earned, and every defeat sting more. The way the townsfolk talk about him as a laughing stock adds that social layer too. It’s not just about power; it’s about respect and worth.

That moment when Jiliu Jia gets hit by the fireball and Xu Shanrou counters with water, and it’s implied she’s at the Demon level now—that was a cool twist. I didn’t expect her to be that strong, especially since she’s blind and young. But her strong reaction to protect him, even though she can’t see, makes her feel so capable. It also sets up this interesting dynamic where the “weaker” guy is being shielded by the “weaker” girl, which plays into his pride issues later.
