The outer sect assessment scene was pretty standard – bamboo forest maze, root bone examination – nothing groundbreaking. But the moment the sect leader showed up and everyone bowed, you could feel the shift in atmosphere. The description of Miejue’s eyes being like ten thousand years of ice actually gave me chills. The author knows how to build authority around a character. Too bad the moment she softens for the MC, that ice melts faster than a popsicle in July.
I'm calling it now: Pei Yanshu is going to regret his coldness. Whenever Shen Qingli comes back powerful and beautiful, he's going to have a moment of shocking realization about what he lost and who he condemned. That's a classic trope, but the setup is so perfect here. He's so high and mighty now, judging her, and the fall is going to be so satisfying to read.
1 That “War Faction” part… the cold mockery on his lips. I could feel his bitterness. The idea that even during an apocalypse, people back home are playing political games for resources instead of just fighting the monsters. It rings so true. You know exactly that kind of short-sighted, selfish behavior would happen. It’s a great critique of human nature that makes the story feel more real, even with all the sci-fi.
